She's been hotly tipped to take on the coveted role of Princess Margaret on the Netflix series The Crown.

But Helena Bonham Carter looked worlds away from her potential royal family alter-ego as she ran errands in London on Tuesday.

The 51 year-old actress battled against the drizzle in a black quilted jacket with a faux fur trim over a long tartan dress.

The casually clad actress layered her look with black tights and a pink floral scarf.

Helena trudged through the grey day with comfortable sky blue trainers with a platform soles. 

The Kings Speech star went without a stitch of make-up for her stroll, wrapping up her signature brunette hair in a delicate blue ribbon. 

Toting a white carrier bag, Helena bundled up against the wind and rain with her hands in her pockets.

Meanwhile, rumours have been swirling that Helena is 'all but confirmed' to take over the role of Princess Margaret from Vanessa Kirby on the hit Netflix drama The Crown. 

Vanessa dropped the biggest hint yet that she will be handing on the royal baton to the Harry Potter villain on in January. 

The 29 year-old actress, who caught the eye of Tom Cruise before securing her role in the Mission Impossible franchise, added fuel to the fire when she shared a selfie with Helena in a glamorous venue.

The golden-haired beauty revealed she was 'honoured' to be joined by the A-list star in association with Netflix's lavish series The Crown. 

In the cosy Instagram post, Vanessa exuded elegance in her frilled white blouse while Helena showcased her trademark quirky sense of style in a loud patterned dress teamed with dazzling star-shaped pendant necklace.

For the last season, Vanessa has been putting on a regal performance the Queen’s glamorous younger sister.

But it seems Helena would be a good fit for the role after all she won the best supporting actress BAFTA for the Queen Motion in 2010's The King Speech.  

MailOnline has approached Helena Bonham Carter and Vanessa Kirby's representatives for comment. 

A number of the stars, including protagonists Claire Foy and Matt Smith, are being replaced by older actresses and actors for authenticity as the third season moves into the later years surrounding the royals' lives.

The Netflix series – rumoured to have cost an estimated £100million for the first season alone – will be recast every two series as the central characters age.  

According to The Evening Standard, recasting Vanessa, who played the part in the first two seasons, came in order to continue the story and timeline. 

The award-winning star was being eyed up to play Elizabeth in the show following the departure of Claire Foy but bosses decided she'd be better suited to Margaret while Olivia Colman will play the matriarch.

Helena, who was previously married to director Tim Burton, has a very personal connection to Princess Margaret and the Royal Family.

According to the newspaper, Helena's home in Oxfordshire, Mill House, was owned by Jane Stevens, who served as a lady-in-waiting to Margaret. 

The star will play the role for the next two series - documenting the fourth decade of Elizabeth's life - and then producers will go on the hunt for another actress to take over the reins in order to document the queen's life from her 60s to her 90s - providing Netflix decide to recommission it.

Although fans are no doubt devastated to see the 33-year-old beauty leave, it has always been clear from the start that another actress would be contracted to play Her Majesty from her 40s through to her 60s.

Claire said: 'This is the last stint, it's over, I'm done. I always knew it was only going to be two series and then part would be reincarnated and someone else takes over. That's the nature of the part.'

Also leaving the cast is Matt Smith, who played Prince Philip, who will be replaced by an older actor but it is not yet been revealed who will take on the part.

Netflix has invested a staggering £100 million in the royal drama, which is currently intended to have six series which makes it the most expensive TV show to date.

Both the cast and crew garnered mass recognition by the likes of the Screen Actors' Guild, the Critics Choice and the Emmys in the year after its release.
