It’s edition #461 of ARIA Chart Watch and once again there’s no change to the No.1s on either of this week’s top 100s.
But could the number one position on the singles chart be under threat next week?
How many new certifications have hit the countdown? (Hint… lots).
And on the albums chart, which are the only three LPs to debut in this week’s top 100?
Best you dive right in here…;
SINGLES
It’s now four weeks in the number one spot for Drake’s global smash ‘God’s Plan’. It’s obviously doing well too, given its first certification (which it achieves this week) is a platinum one, meaning it’s sold through more than 70,000 units in Australia in just five weeks. Pretty good going.
The challenge for Drake next week, however, is expected to come from Kendrick Lamar and SZA, whose single ‘All The Stars’ continues its ascendancy. It’s up another three positions to No.2 this week, displacing Rudimental and co.
Rudimental, however, can take some solace from the fact that ‘These Days’ (with Jess Glynne, Macklemore and Dan Caplen) notches up a fresh new gold accreditation (35,000 units sold).
As mentioned in The Purge this morning, Post Malone’s singles seemingly have had their certifications tweaked this week. ‘I Fall Apart’ is the first of the batch, improving from a single platinum accreditation last week to triple platinum this week. That track has sold in excess of 210,000 units in its 21 week run.
The superstar pairing of Eminem and Ed Sheeran has done the trick sales-wise too; ‘River’ achieving a platinum certification.
The certifications keep coming, with Dua Lipa’s new single ‘IDGAF’ achieving a gold one at the same time as climbing to a new ARIA chart peak of No.7. Camila Cabello’s ‘Never Be The Same’ is now platinum (No.11).
That cool Bazzi track continues to improve its chart fortunes. ‘Mine’ has only been in the countdown for four weeks, but it’s got designs on a top ten berth, climbing five more spots to No.12.
Zedd and Grey are into the top 20 by improving 11 places to No.16 with ‘The Middle’. Marshmello x Khalid’s ‘Silence’ creeps into the four times platinum bracket (280,000 units) and Post Malone’s ‘Rockstar’ doubles its chart fortunes, shifting from double platinum last week to quadruple platinum this week.
Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton’s ‘Say Something’ edges a little higher and is now a top 20 hit in Australia (No.24 to No.20).
Good news for Marshmello again; ‘Friends’ with Anne Marie climbing into the ARIA top 30, jumping ten spots to No.22.
And more good news for Marshmello, with his Selena Gomez collaboration ‘Wolves’ picking up its first accreditation… a double platinum one (140,000 sales).
Hailee Steinfeld, Alesso, Florida Georgia Line and Watt also score a fresh double platinum certification for ‘Let Me Go’ (No.27), while Post Malone’s week of certification tweaks continues with ‘Candy Paint’ (now platinum at No.28).
A debut at No.29 for Khalid & Normani’s ‘Love Lies’. A ten place jump from No.40 to No.30 for Migos’ ‘Stir Fry’. A 13 place jump from No.44 to No.31 for Vance Joy’s ‘We’re Going Home’. And a No.32 debut for Delta Goodrem’s new single ‘Think About You’.
Zac Efron now has a gold selling single under his belt. ‘Rewrite The Stars’ with Zendaya (from the soundtrack to ‘The Greatest Showman’) has now gone gold at No.34.
Ditto Troye Sivan’s latest single ‘My My My’, which achieves its first accreditation in the No.37 spot.
Imagine Dragons’ ‘Thunder’ rolls into five times platinum territory (350,000 copies sold) at No.39, while Australia’s own Sheppard score a platinum hit with ‘Coming Home’ (No.41).
Hailee Steinfeld graces us with her presence again at No.43 on debut with her new single ‘Capital Letters’ (with BloodPop) and Lauv scores a new triple platinum accreditation at No.49.
Just missing the top 50 this week on debut is BlocBoy JB and Drake’s ‘Look Alive’. It lobs at No.51.
It mightn’t have touched the top 30, but Taylor Swift’s ‘End Game’ still ticked over sales-wise. Enough to score it a gold certification (down eight to No.63).
Charlie Puth’s latest single ‘How Long’ suffers quite the fall. It’s down 17 places from last week’s No.50.
Ditto Calum Scott’s ‘You Are The Reason’, which dives again (down 21 to No.70).
Peking Duk’s ‘Wasted’ makes up some of the ground it lost in last week’s 22 place drop (up from No.89 to No.73) and Logic’s ‘1-800-273-8255’ makes it over the triple platinum threshold.
The Chainsmokers are back into the top 100 with ‘You Owe Me’ – on debut at No.82 and just behind their six times platinum smash ‘Something Just Like This’ with Coldplay’.
Justin Timberlake’s ‘Filthy’ slumps 25 spots to No.84, but it does so with a shiny new gold certification in tow.
Kylie’s ‘Dancing’ is still hanging in there, albeit only just. It’s down from No.72 to No.85.
Noah Kahan and Julia Michaels round out the week’s top 100 debuts, entering the countdown at No.96 with ‘Hurt Somebody’.
ALBUMS
It’s still the ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack heading the pack on the ARIA albums chart.
And it’s still joined in the top five by two other soundtracks (‘Black Panther’ at No.2 and ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ at No.4).
Two big pieces of news in the top five this week are that the Ed Sheeran album ‘÷’ notches up a seventh platinum certification, meaning it’s now sold in excess of 490,000 copies locally, and the No.5 debut of the new Ball Park Music album ‘Good Mood’. It’s the Brisbane band’s third successive top five debut.
Marlon Williams also makes an entrance in the top ten; ‘Make Way For Love’ entering the countdown in Australia at a respectable No.8.
The Wombats lose their grasp on a top ten berth, having debuted at No.5 last week with ‘Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life’ (No.13).
Vance Joy’s ‘Dream Your Life Away’ improves from No.44 to No.26 as excitement builds over the release of his new album ‘Nation Of Two’ (out yesterday).
‘The Best Of The Wiggles’ is up (No.48 to No.36), as are Drake’s ‘More Life’ (No.51 to No.58) and Queen’s ‘Greatest Hits’ (No.54 to No.40). AC/DC’s ‘Live’ is also back into the top 50 (No.53 to No.42), as is Carole King’s ‘Tapestry’ (No.63 to No.44).
In the middle of them all is a new gold certification for Chris Brown’s album ‘Heartbreak On A Full Moon’ (No.39).
Not such great news for Hockey Dad, however; the band’s new album ‘Blend Inn’ debuted at No.6 last week, but finds itself 40 places lower and in danger of dropping out of the top 50.
Three other albums back in the top 50, meantime, belong to Justin Bieber, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Crowded House, up from positions 55, 59 and 66 to Nos.47, 48 and 50 respectively.
The improvements keep coming, with big leaps for The Killers’ ‘Direct Hits’ (No.75 to No.55) and Niall Horan’s ‘Flicker’ (No.95 to No.56).
But Shania Twain’s ‘Now’ takes a tumble after the recent tour announcement (No.39 to No.58).
Shannon Noll’s ‘Unbroken’ is also lower this week, down another 14 places to No.61.
MGMT’s ‘Little Dark Age’ debuted in the No.31 spot last week, but finds itself a worrying 39 places lower in week two.
Endless Heights’ album ‘Vicious Pleasure’ score the third and final top 100 debut… at No.100.
Albums within the top 50 last week that are now gone from the top 100? They are Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Always Ascending’, which is rapidly descending (No.28 on debut to out of the top 100 entirely), Celtic Woman’s ‘Voices Of Angels’ (No.34) and DZ Deathrays’ ‘Bloody Lovely’ (No.50).
