The Voice: Kelly Clarkson makes sassy debut as judge and takes on show veteran Blake Shelton for top talent

Kelly Clarkson made a sassy debut on season 14 of The Voice on Monday night, describing herself as 'smart as well as hot'.

The 35-year-old pop superstar, who won the the inaugural season of American Idol in 2002, battled throughout the two-hour episode coming head-to-head with Blake Shelton several times.

This season producers introduced a new spin to the game. The 'Block Button' allows each judge to veto one contestant from joining the team of another judge during the Blind Auditions phase.

'I have a lot to offer, because I was them,' said Kelly.

The other judges were season 12 champion Alicia Keys and The Voice veteran Adam Levine.

The first artist of the night was 17-year-old Britton Buchanan, from North Carolina, who impressed the judges with Ray LaMontagne's Trouble.

'I look like a 1990s Matt Damon,' suggested the teen.

Blake hit the block button so Britton could not join Team Adam.

'One hundred percent you've got to go to Alicia Keys,' Adam told Britton.

The teen took Adam's advice and picked Alicia.

Next was Brynn Cartel, a 14-year-old songwriter/musician from Massachusetts who sang Beneath Your Beautiful by Labrinth.

Blake and Kelly wanted her, but Brynn went with Kelly.

'I've been a fan of yours since I was like four-years-old,' Brynn told Kelly.

'I'm going to be the best strategical partner…I'm smart as well as hot,' said Kelly.

Rayshun LaMarr, a 33-year-old cancer survivor from Maryland, was next.

Now cancer-free Rayshun belted out Journey's Don't Stop Believing, choosing the Maroon 5 frontman as his coach.

'Keep believing in great things and great things will happen,' cried Rayshun.

Kelly, who didn't turn around, was also left in tears.

Next was Kyla Jade, who has sung background for Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson.

The 33-year-old Nashville resident performed See Saw by Aretha Franklin.

'I'm the best pick out of this situation,' said Kelly.

The church-trained singer however chose 41-year-old country star Blake.

Blaise Raccuglia took the stage with Wanted by Hunter Hayes.

The 25-year-old Texan is a pool technician and ministry leader when he's not playing music.

No chairs turned.

'I felt the nerves a little bit,' said Kelly.

Twenty-one-year-old Delaware lady Kelsea Johnson had more luck with Meghan Trainor's Like I'm Gonna Lose You.

Adam, Kelly and Alicia all wanted her.

'Kelsea you are absolutely stunning, from the way that you sing, to the way that you look,' gushed Adam, who lost out to Alicia.

Next up was movie theatre barman Drew Cole, from Los Angeles, who gained fame after a YouTube video of him singing to a dog gained 14 million views.

The 25-year-old did Sex And Candy by Marcy Playground, choosing Adam over Blake.

'To me, that's The Voice,' raved Adam.

Dapper-looking teacher/church singer D.R. King did Believer by Imagine Dragons.

He gained spins from Kelly and Blake.

'Your runs were sick,' Kelly told him before he picked her as his mentor.

'I think you're going to be happy with Kelly,' jibed Adam.

Father of three Kaleb Lee was next, with Kenny Chesney's Never Wanted Nothing More.

The raspy, 31-year-old had Kelly and Blake for the taking, but he chose Blake.

'I live country music, I breathe country music,' protested Kelly.

'Stealing a country person is not possible,' Adam consoled.

Kentucky woman Makenzie Thomas, who used to be bullied for her weight, did a rendition of Redbone by Childish Gambino.

She got no turns.

The last performer of the night was gay Texan Justin Kilgore, who blasted out Tomorrow.

The 30-year-old former cheerleader got four turns.

Alicia blocked Blake, but Justin picked Kelly in the end.

'I got screwed,' whined Blake.
