Piers Morgan has revealed his son Bertie had been rushed to hospital after dislocating his shoulder during a rugby match on Thursday.

The Good Morning Britain host, 52, took to Twitter to share a photo of his 17-year-old son looking downcast with his right arm wrapped in bandages and placed in a sling- while revealing Bertie had suffered the same injury one year earlier.

He wrote: 'One year on... same shoulder, same injury (dislocation) same cause (rugby tackle), same A&E department of same hospital.'

The star also praised the tireless work of hospital staff in treating his son's inury, writing: 'On the one positive note, thanks again to staff @KingstonHospNHS for fantastic service. Maybe time to switch to football @bertie_morgan11.'

MailOnline has contacted Piers' representatives for comment. 

He was soon inundated with supportive comments from fans with one writing 'I suspect that shoulder will give him trouble all his life now. Time to rethink rugby. Poor fella, that’s painful. I hope Bertie had a speedy recovery.'

Another follower said: 'Looks like a fine lad who plays a superb sport, in a fantastic hospital with wonderful staff, who has a top Dad! Get well soon Kiddo.'

Piers shares sons Bertie, short for Albert, Stanley and Spencer with ex-wife Mario Shalloe, to whom he was wed from 1991-2008.

He also has daughter Elise, six, with current wife Celia Walden, who he wed in 2010.

The tweet came hours after Piers confirmed he would be staying on Good Morning Britain for at least two more years.

Piers shared a hilarious photo of himself shouting down a foghorn while co-host Susanna Reid  held her head in her hands to announce the joyous news.

He wrote: 'BREAKING: Bad news for Britain, even worse news for @susannareid100.... I just signed a new deal to stay on @GMB for 2 more years. #thefoghornstays.'
