A glance through the fitness personalities of Instagram will often offer before-and-after transformation photographs, in which women go from overweight to honed and toned.

While it is not always said, the implication is that these women are happier now in their new svelte frames - and you would be too.

However, Australian model, Kate Wasley, believes that 'health comes in all shapes and sizes' - and is on a mission to re-educate women around body confidence.

On Sunday, the Sports Illustrated star, 23, shared a candid and 'different kind of before and after' snap on her Instagram page, in which she has put on weight and is in better shape than ever.

Kate also shared her dieting history - which has seen her detox, 'calorie count chewing gum' and live off 800 calories a day - before she finally grew to love herself.

Writing on Instagram, Kate explained that she started dieting in high school - when she was 'at least 8-10kg heavier than I am now' - because the comments from her peers began to sting:

'One day after a teacher told me in front of all my friends that I "probably wasn't as fit as I could be"... I decided it was time for a change,' she said.

The 23-year-old from Perth quickly switched from 'eating pizza every day and drinking a litre of ice coffee and never exercising' to 'dieting HARD':

'My very first diet was the "detox", which consisted of something ridiculous like 800 calories and a DISGUSTING juice with every meal,' she said.

'Fast forward a few years and I had tried every diet in the book: high protein, protein only, no carbs, detoxes, juice cleanses and settled on one that I found worked and made me feel good, not eating.'

She said she tried all sorts of different diets, from extreme detoxes to high protein, low carb and calorie counting approaches (pictured now)

'And while at the time I could have sworn to you that I could forever maintain the no carb low calorie lifestyle... I couldn't. I lost energy, motivation, I was tired and irritable all the time,' she said (pictured now)

Kate said she was 'stuck calorie counting my chewing gum, I would blend lemon, ice and spinach into a "smoothie"'.

'And while at the time I could have sworn to you that I could forever maintain the no carb low calorie lifestyle... I couldn't. I lost energy, motivation, I was tired and irritable all the time.

'I stopped seeing my friends because I was scared of eating/not eating in public. I was 18 and refused to go out and have fun or have a drink with my friends because it seemed the skinnier I got, the more self conscious I got.'

At her worst, Kate admitted that when a friend was about to leave her and travel to Europe for a few months, she said she told them she would be 'so much skinnier' when they got back:

'I had already lost 27kg at that point. But in my head I looked no different,' she said.

'Plus as if he cared! He was my friend and loved me for me and not what I looked like.'

It wasn't until the 23-year-old travelled to Europe that she realised something needed to change and so she studied personal training and nutrition to help her (pictured now)

'I'm much happier now that I've accepted my body. It is a hard thing to do especially when you feel you're at rock bottom,' she explained

The change came about for Kate when she later travelled to Europe and felt depressed at the fact that she denied herself 'any of the amazing pasta in Italy' and any of the wine:

'I decided to make a change,' she said.

'I went and got my certificates in personal training and west on to study health promo and nutrition at university.'

The 23-year-old said she slowly started to eat a 'healthy and balanced diet':

'I kept exercising, but wouldn't beat myself up if I didn't. I'm much happier now that I've accepted my body. It is a hard thing to do especially when you feel you're at rock bottom.

'It's tough in a society where ways to achieve the "perfect body" are constantly shoved down your throat. I still have my days where I stress about my flaws and that's okay because I'm human.'

Kate previously spoke to FEMAIL, alongside her Any Body Co co-founder and friend, Georgia Gibbs, about the importance of self-love:

'The Any Body ethos is simple. Quit the comparisons between ourselves and the women next to us. Instead, be confident in your skin and lift up other women rather than competing with them,' Georgia told Daily Mail Australia.

'We want to be able to create a safe space for women to be able to speak about body image, a place that shows everybody has insecurities and "imperfections" and that comparing yourself to the woman next to you isn't going to change you,' Kate added.

She added that she has learned to 'ignore' the haters:

'Honestly, they aren't worth your attention or ruining your day. Nine times out of ten anything anyone says to you about your body stems from their own insecurities and fears.

'Surround yourself with people who love you for you and not just what you look like.'

These days, Kate radiates health from the inside out - and practises healthy eating and regular exercise through choice rather than guilt:

'Drink plenty of water, get enough sleep and surround yourself with loving and supportive people,' Kate told FEMAIL of her health and fitness rules.

'Taking care of your insides radiates out.'

Kate said her day on a plate looks something like 'avo or eggs for breakfast, a salad or sandwich for lunch and chicken and veg for dinner'.

However, she will not deny herself if she fancies a treat or a glass of wine.
