'They wanted me to sound less Australian!' Margot Robbie admits Neighbours bosses hired a dialect coach to fix her 'bogan' accent

She started playing schoolgirl Donna Freedman at the tender age of 17, after moving to Melbourne from the Gold Coast.

And Margot Robbie has admitted her accent was too 'bogan' when she first started the show and the Australian soap's producers were less than impressed with it.

'When I was on Neighbours they hired a dialect coach to make me sound less Australian even though I was still playing an Australian character,' she confessed to news.com.au.

The I, Tonya star made the revelation while attempting to do an Australian 'bogan' accent during an interview to promote her latest film Peter Rabbit.

Margot made the major move to Melbourne as a teenager after deciding she wanted to be an actress.

She didn't yet have an acting gig lined up, but was determined to secure a role on Neighbours and cold called the producers until they allowed her to audition.

It worked - and she portrayed schoolgirl Donna Freedman from 2008 to 2011.

After arriving onset as a young actress, she admitted her diet of Fruit Loops left her castmates concerned about her diet.

'I was 17 when I started on the job and I had just moved from the Gold Coast and didn't know anyone in Melbourne [where Neighbours is filmed],' she told The Project

'Obviously I had never lived on my own before and everyone just pretty much took me under their wing.'

One of the downsides of leaving home at an early age to chase your dreams is preparedness, she revealed.

'I was pretty much living on Fruit Loops for breakfast, lunch and dinner,' she said.

The Oscar-nominated actress, who has since found global stardom with her turns in I, Tonya and The Wolf Of Wall Street, admitted she couldn't believe acting could be a full-time job.

'I realised I had a recurring role on Neighbours and that it was a job. I remember asking other people who had been on it for 20 years: "Do you have any other jobs on the side?" she told The Sun-Herald.

'And they they said "No", and I said "Really? You do just acting!" So then I was just like "Wow, this is a job! This is my job then".'
