The 'humane' prison being built in Greenland that looks more like a ultra-modern luxury ski resort

A 'humane prison' is set to open next year in Greenland, as an answer to the country's lack of resources for more dangerous criminals.
Ny Anstalt is located in Nuuk, the capital of the country, and is set to open in 2019. It is the product of a competition for a contract to design a new prison.
The theory behind humane prisons is that inmates staying in more civilised prisons will not be as isolated or institutionalized when they return to society.
The penitentiary has 76 cells of 130 square feet, with 40 of them closed - for more dangerous prisoners - and 36 open. Inmates with privileges will be able to go into the city to work and make money, but will have to travel back to their cells in the evening.

Although the cells themselves are small, inhabitants can enjoy taking in the stunning vistas of Sermitsiaq, a mountain which their rooms overlook.
One feature of the prison is the use of glass - on arrival, prisoners will be able to see into the buildings in an attempt to make it less traumatic.
Within Ny Anstalt, there are communal areas and kitchens for inmates to socialise in. Also within the complex is a sports centre, a library and a church.

The 86,000 square feet project was built as an answer to Greenland's lack of closed prisons, which resulted in more dangerous inmates being sent to Herstedvester, in Denmark.
This resulted in a language barrier between the guards in Denmark - who generally do not speak Greenlandic - and the inmates transported to the Danish prison.
Greenland has a much higher incarceration rate than the rest of the Nordic region, and one reason which could explain it is the pushing of the state for inhabitants to move from rural areas to cities in the 1950s - and the upheaval may have resulted in social issues.
Lead design architect Thomas Ruus Christensen said of Ny Anstalt: 'You can't escape the prison because it's surrounded by a big wall, but you can look at the view and escape in your mind -- and that's important,' reports CNN.

He adds that the prison's layout, which is on three levels, means that amount of inmates in one area can be controlled, and inmates can be kept separate if needs be.
'The guards don't need to carry weapons, and can develop better relationships with the prisoners, which is essential to the concept of rehabilitation.'
Another of Ny Anstalt's architects, Jette Birkeskov Mogensen, said the process of understanding the inmates was very emotive.
'Learning about the prisoners and thinking about what conditions brought them to this situation has affected me deeply'.
