Just a few short weeks ago, she wept openly as she said goodbye to her husband, Prince Henrik, at his funeral.

But today Denmark's Queen Margrethe drew on the stoicism that comes with decades on the throne to get back to the daily business of royal engagements - with her daughter-in-law close to her side.

Crown Princess Mary, who is married to the Queen's oldest son, Crown Prince Frederik, was there to provide support as the monarch arrived at the Greve Museum, where she smiled as she was presented with a pretty bunch of flowers by a young well-wisher.

On February 20, thousands of Danes lined the streets of Copenhagen for the funeral of Prince Henrik, who died in his sleep at Fredensborg Castle at the age of 83.

The Queen and her daughter-in-law, 46, who was chic in a monochrome outfit, were attending an anniversary celebration at the Greve Museum, which is south of Copenhagen.

The monarch was seen smiling as she greeted members of the public outside the museum, and again inside as she and Mary sat next to one another at a presentation.

The occasion came after what has been a testing period for the Queen, who could not conceal her grief at her husband's emotional funeral service.

Prince Henrik had previously stunned Danes when he broke a 459-year-old tradition by announcing his choice not to be buried in the tomb that had been prepared for himself and his wife.

Shortly afterwards the palace issued a statement to confirm that he was struggling with dementia.

Prince Henrik's death sparked rumours that the 77-year-old Queen will abdicate the Danish throne, allowing her heir, Crown Prince Frederik, to reign.

Should Frederik, 49, succeed, Crown Princess Mary, the mother of their four children - Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine - will automatically become Queen of Denmark.
