Katherine Heigl auditioned for Dawson's Creek back in 1998... but was deemed 'too old' for Jen role

It's been 20 years since Dawson's Creek first aired. 

And on Wednesday it was revealed that Katherine Heigl, 39, was almost cast as Jen Lindely in WB's teen drama over Michelle Williams who eventually landed the role. 

'She looked slightly older at that time,' creator Kevin Williamson told Entertainment Weekly. 'Even though she was younger, I just think she was more mature. She gave a great audition, I remember we were all sort of like, 'Wow, she's good.''

But ultimately Michelle Williams won Kevin over.

'I'm a horror movie guy, so I recognized Michelle from Species,' he explained. 'She was the baby Species monster. But she walked in and she came across as an angel.'

Dawson's Creek ran for a total of six seasons.

A mere year later, Heigl was cast as a key player in the sci-fi series Roswell where she played an alien/human hybrid for three seasons.

Some might agree that she's had a more fruitful career compared to Michelle who never starred in another TV-series. 

Where as Katherine spent five years playing Dr. Izzie Stevens on the hit-medical drama Grey's Anatomy starting in 2005.

'I love how attached people feel to it now,' Williams told Entertainment Weekly. 'That stuff that gets in there during those really formative teen years it kind of stays there, I find it really heartwarming to hear people talk about what it mean to them'

In her cover shoot interview with Entertainment Weekly, Michelle reflected on her time playing Jen.
