The Handmaid's Tale disturbing season two trailer sees Elisabeth Moss asking what freedom looks like

Hulu on Wednesday released a sneak peek of The Handmaid’s Tale second season.

The critically-acclaimed sci-fi drama stars Elisabeth Moss as Offred, who is seen being silent as she's hauled in the back of a truck while thinking of her future.

'Is this what freedom looks like?' she's heard saying. 'What will happen when I get out? There probably is no out. Gilead is within you.'

The program, based off of Margaret Atwood's 1985 book, is 'set in a dystopian future' to tell the tale of Offred, 'a woman [who's] forced to live as a concubine under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship' following a civil war in America, according to Hulu.

As a result of the conflicts, the Gilead state is established, leaving women without their basic civil rights, with Offred - originally known as June Osborne - being made to have sex with and carry children for Gilead chiefs due to widespread infertility among women.

The program's first season concluded with a pregnant Offred in hot water with Gilead commanders after breaking the movement's rules.

To avoid the punishment, Offred slips free of Gilead leadership - spearheaded by Commander Fred (Joseph Fiennes) and wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) - and appears to be on the lam with a helping hand from Nick (Max Minghella), whose child she's expecting.

On the flipside, the movement in opposition of Gilead - referred to as The Resistance - continues to battle in Canada, with Offred's pre-war husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and friend Moira (Samira Wiley) on their side.

In the visually-enthralling preview, fans get a glance at the colonies set up by the Gilead leadership, where the characters Emily (Alexis Bledel) and Janine (Madeline Brewer) were condemned to after infractions of Gilead law.

At the conclusion of the sneak peek, Offred is heard in a voice-over saying, 'My name is June Osborne - I am free,' referencing her actual birth name.

The Handmaid’s Tale, created by Bruce Miller, returns to Hulu April 25.
