Coronation Street: Pat Phelan plunges to his death at the hands of wife Eileen leaving fans reeling

He's one of the most prolific soap villains to date.

And Pat Phelan finally got his comeuppance on the intense Coronation Street double bill on Friday night.

Fans were left reeling after Phelan - played by Connor McIntyre - plunged to his death after wife Eileen stomped on his fingers as he clutched perilously at the cliffs edge.

Phelan's death caused a shock wave among fans as they finally got the see the homicidal villain perish, bringing his gritty story line to an end.    

One viewer watching at home tweeted: 'Ohmygod Philans [sic] is telling everything to Eileen who he's killed #Corrie', while another stunned fan commented: 'Holy guacamole #Corrie that was breathtaking! Kind of sad to see uber-villain #patphelan disappear beneath the waves'.

'Well done Eileen. Phelan deserved that' another jubilant viewer said, while a fourth tweeted: 'What an amazing, tense eerie #corrie tonight. Loved how Phelan's life was in Eileen's hands, brilliant acting by all and most probably the best corrie baddie so far'.

Other fans were not so sure they'd seen the last of Phelan, with one writing: 'Unless they find the body and we see someone going to identify Pat I'm certain that he will be back in a year or two'.  

As it was revealed that Andy - portrayed by Oliver Farnworth - and Vinny (Ian Kelsey) were both discovered buried in a concrete slab, friends were desperate to contact Eileen who had rushed off on holiday with murdering husband Phelan. 

Once Phelan knew about the bodies, he quickly organised a fishing boat to make his great escape, but Eileen attempted to stop him. 

Injuring herself during their blazing row, Eileen gave up trying to stop him, but was mortified after listening to Tim's voicemail sharing the details of what the police had discovered.

As she rushed to get signal, Eileen managed to escape to the lighthouse, but evil Phelan was right behind and took her phone before she had a chance to call the police.  

In a blaze of fury, Phelan confessed to his horrendous crimes.  

'Four Eileen - Four bodies, four souls, and I bore witness over all of them. You really want to know what I am? I'm that!' Phelan revealed.

'You're insane!' Eileen seethed.

In his desperation, Phelan attempted to grab the keys from Eileen, but ended up falling over the side, but managed to cling onto some rope.  

Begging for his life, he pleaded: 'Please, I don't want to die.'
