Helen Mirren, 72, reveals getting her eyebrows tattooed on is the secret to her age-defying looks

She recently posted a make-up free selfie on Instagram ahead of the Oscars after claiming she's suffered with 'insecurities all her life'. 

And Helen Mirren has revealed her secret to her age-defying looks, admitting she has got her eyebrows tattooed on.

The actress, 72, said she was 'fed up' with her sparse brows and confessed she has noticed a 'huge difference' in her confidence since undergoing the microblading procedure.

'I’ll tell you what I had done recently, which I love — I got my eyebrows tattooed,' she told Daily Mail's Sebastian Shakespeare.

'I was fed up of my brows barely being there and when one of my girlfriends got it done, I thought that they looked great.

'They’re very lightly and delicately done — but it means that when I get up in the morning and I have no make-up on, at least I have eyebrows. 

'It’s made a huge difference.'

The Calendar Girls star is no stranger to having inkings, after getting a tattoo of interlocking V's meaning 'love thy neighbour' while 'very drunk' in Minnesota.    

Commenting on her tattoo in the past, Dame Helen said she acquired the tattoo while acting with an American Indian theatre group on a reservation in Minnesota.

‘About six of us got them at the same time,’ she added. ‘It’s a kind of mad bonding thing that you do from time to time in your life.

‘It was my little act of rebellion. It was done with a safety pin and was very painful.

‘I’ve never regretted it. But back then, only prisoners, sailors and Hell’s Angels got tattooed. Now it’s gone madly out of control.’

But despite her sky-rocketing career on the showbiz circuit and her jaw-dropping beauty, the actress divulged she has been plagued with insecurities all of her life.

She told The Daily Telegraph: 'I have experienced insecurity all my life, and I still do on a daily basis. I remember having these panic attacks but not at the obvious moments.'

The Woman in Gold star confessed were 'so many things' she didn't like about her body when she was propelled into the limelight as an actress in the late 1960's. 

She explained: 'Because I have never felt beautiful. There are people who are beautiful and I'm objective enough to know that I don't fit into that category.

'For me, still now, it's to do with wit and intelligence rather than the way I look. I don't feel clever or funny enough.'

The Oscar winner scooped Best Actress for her 2006 performance of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.
