Jess was enjoying a break away from chilly Britain after openly speaking for the first time about her battle with chronic depression.

Speaking on Loose Women, Jess revealed that one of the best days of her life - being accepted into the famed Italia Conti stage school - helped her to come out of a difficult childhood.

But that amazing moment was immediately marred when on the same day her 13-month-old nephew passed away.

Jess recalled: 'The thing that got me out of that sadness was Italia Conti stage school. I auditioned and got in.

'Then I had a scholarship for college and it was the day I got the letter in 2006 that my nephew died of meningitis and septicemia. It took away the brilliance of that day.'

Jess then went onto add: 'I got hit with depression. The head teacher let me go away for a couple of months.

'I went back for rehearsals and my favourite teacher told me the light in my eyes had gone out. I didn’t want to see anyone. My confidence was gone. I just wanted to hide.'

Jess went onto reveal that she eventually dropped out of the prestigious stage school to care for her mum Debbie, who lost her sight after suffering Uveal effusion syndrome, a rare condition that causes fluid to build at the back of the eyes.

'I left school and mum was still on the sofa,' she recalled. 'She was too scared to make a cup of tea.

'I said "You can be like this for rest of your life or you can do something about it," so we did some research and found local braille classes. Watching mum going through something so difficult made me keep going.

'I was on anti-depressants at the time but my mum made me keep going. I felt like I was burden to everyone because I was so depressed.'
