Leading the way on the exclusive list are Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7 million) and Avatar ($760.5 million).

The film, which was directed by Ryan Coogler, stands at $1.29 billion worldwide, ahead of smashes such as Frozen, and 2017 mega-hits Beauty and the Beast and The Fate of the Furious.

Black Panther - starring Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya and Michael B. Jordan - sits just behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi on the international list, which is in ninth place with $1.33 billion.

Last month, the film, set in the land of Wakanda, edged out The Avengers ($624 million) in establishing itself as highest-grossing superhero film ever.

In the wake of the film's banner $240 million opening in February, Coogler took to social media to explain how emotionally moved he was by the massive turnout.

'Deep down we all hoped that people would come to see a film about a fictional country on the continent of Africa, made up of a cast of people of African descent,' he said. 'Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong. It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film.

'But to see people of all backgrounds wearing clothing that celebrates their heritage, taking pictures next to our posters with their friends and family, and sometimes dancing in the lobbies of theaters - often moved me and my wife to tears.'

Boseman, Wright, Gurira and others reprise their Marvel Universe roles for the star-studded Avengers: Infinity War, which features an ensemble cast including Idris Elba, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Gwyneth Paltrow, among others.

Black Panther is in theaters now, while Avengers: Infinity War hits the big screen April 27.
