Hannah Spearritt's boob job hell: S Club singer explains how implants led to hair and memory loss... as fans ask why it made her accent more 'plummy'
She recently revealed that a secret 2013 boob job lead to 'the hardest, most traumatic four years of [her] life.'
And S Club 7 singer Hannah Spearritt has given greater insight into the fallout from her common B to C cup cosmetic procedure, which was ultimately reversed in 2016 because it caused a severe decline in her mental and physical well-being.
The musician, 37, bravely appeared on This Morning on Monday with her boyfriend Adam Thomas in a bid to raise awareness for other women, though some fans were preoccupied by the sound her 'plummy' accent during the appearance.
Regret: Hannah Spearritt went on This Morning on Monday to talk about her regret over a boob job that caused her depression and hair loss
Initially, Hannah says she was happy with the results, even though the healing process took some time.
'There was a lot of swelling,' she explained. 'And even though I had nothing to compare it to, I was happy with the results.'
Hannah had her breast augmentation in August 2013, changing her pert small-B cup to a curvy C.
The change looked all the more dramatic given her slender size eight, 5ft 3in frame, prompting fans to compliment her new, ‘sophisticated’ look.
Before and after: Hannah went under the knife in 2013 (left, after the op in 2014) in search of a more womanly, curvy look than her original small-B cup (right, in 2004)
Now: Hannah has now returned to her natural size, after having the implants removed in 2016
Failed op: Hannah's boyfriend Adam Thomas (right) said he never wanted her to have the operationy and she nows says he has learned to love her old chest size
'But after six months, [my health] started to deteriorate. It started with anxiety and at the time I just put it down to circumstances.
'Then things started to happen like depression, things like ridiculous panic attacks - just a pile of unfolded washing would cause me to have a breakdown.'
As well as her well-being, Hannah also complained of unwanted changes to her physical appearance, saying she was 'the total opposite' of herself.
‘I had hair loss, fatigue, memory loss,' she said. 'I still have some of that. There was a list of symptoms that goes on and on.'
In pain: Hannah (far left) was in pain when she reunited with bandmates (from left) Jon Lee, Tina Barrett, Jo O'Meara, Bradley McIntosh, Rachel Stevens and Paul Cattermole for the 2015 reunion tour of their Nineties band S Club 7
Heavily medicated: She was relying on heavy medication to get her through and her boyfriend says he was acting like a 'carer'
Hannah believed the textured silicone gel pockets or breast implants she had put in were the reason for her misery, so she sought medical advice.
'I went for pretty much every test out there, everything came back negative, I was told that I was crazy, I was put on a lot of medication.'
In a lot of pain, Hannah was even heavily medicated when she went back on tour with S Club for their reunion.
Her boyfriend Ben says he felt 'more like a carer than partner' at the time, telling presenters on Monday, 'it was quite stressful'.
The Miami 7: Hannah (back left) was in the pop band S Club 7 between 1999 and 2003 (here in 1999 for the TV show Miami 7)
Cutie: Here in 2000, she was best known for her girl nextdoor looks
'It was difficult because I had to separate the two, I had to remind myself that this was symptomatic and it's not really Hannah.'
Hannah decided to have an ‘explant’ – or removal of implants – in 2016.
‘We spoke to a doctor in US, listed all my symptoms and they confirmed it was the breast implants. But you can't test for it - they gave me the confidence to go ahead with the ex-plant.'
She noticed the improvement immediately: ‘My energy came back in bucket loads, I also had low-grade fever throughout the time I had the implants in, straight away it went back to normal.’
Womanly curves: Left on Monday and right in 2016, Hannah tried desperately to convince doctors that it was her implants that were causing her mental and physical symptoms
Yet viewers of The Morning also noticed that Hannah's accent was distinctly different from her S Club 7 days.
'Did Hannah Spearritt's plummy accent appear when they took her breast implants out? #ThisMorning' one fan cruelly jibed, following her appearance.
Another questionned: 'Has Hannah Spearritt always been so posh? Every other word is yah #ThisMorning'
'Why has #HannahSpearritt suddenly got a posh accent, when shes from Norfolk and has always spoken with a Norfolk accent?? #ThisMorning'
'Why is @hannahspearritt talking like that, yah yah yah #ThisMorning' commented another user.
'Why is @hannahspearritt suddenly speaking like she was brought up in Chelsea ok yah @thismorning'
Confusion: Some viewers were preoccupied with Hannah's speaking voice as she gave a brave interview to raise awareness about the averse effects
Though for the most part, viewers were delighted to see the singer raising awareness for such an important cause.
'She’s an inspiration that she has come out of her hell stronger!' said one fan. 'Such a beautiful woman. I hope you continue to heal mentally. Love and best wishes to you'
Another said: 'Thank you for coming forward and raising awareness on breast implants illness. Many women in the Uk and world wide suffering as Medical ‘professionals’ still lagging behind. No informed consent @hannahspearritt'
'Well done Hannah for speaking out about the problems and certain health issues that can happen when having breast implants. You were amazing. X'
On her initial reasons behind her cosmetic surgery, Hannah told The Mail On Sunday two weeks ago that she had always compared herself to other girls.
Inspirational: But for the most-part, viewers were thrilled to see her share her story
‘I never felt womanly enough on top. I’d compare myself to the other girls in the band during photoshoots and was jealous of their beautiful curves.’
Hannah was in the pop band S Club 7 between 1999 and 2003, with Tina Barrett, Rachel Stevens, Jo O'Meara, Jon Lee, Paul Cattermole and Bradley McIntosh.
Her operation - believed to have cost between £3,000 to £8,000 - was performed by a top Harley Street cosmetic surgeon just before the singers got back together for a tour.
Her boyfriend Adam was against the operation, telling This Morning: ‘I thought she was fine the way she was.’
Now, following the reversal of her op, Hannah says she loves her old, familiar look.
'I love [my old boobs]! I had to go through all that to realise I love them!'
Story to tell: Hannah said she noticed the effects of a boob job reversal almost immediately
