SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Sophie Dahl is reunited with her ‘Houdini’ lost tortoise

Her grandad Roald Dahl’s tale about two lonely souls finding companionship through a tortoise, Esio Trot, was turned into a heart-warming film in 2015 starring Dame Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman.

Now former supermodel Sophie Dahl has found herself at the centre of a real-life drama starring her own pet tortoise called Torty.

The 40-year-old, who has two children with her jazz musician husband, Jamie Cullum, reveals that Torty fled their Buckinghamshire home at the weekend before finding his way back via social media.

‘I woke up to a midnight text from a girlfriend asking whether Torty was missing because she’d seen on Facebook that a tortoise had been found a few streets away from our house,’ recounts Sophie, who left modelling to become a writer. ‘I don’t think so, I said. But I went downstairs to look for him. Not in his house.

‘I realised that I’d left the kitchen door open while I was making dinner and hadn’t seen him since then. We located the Facebook message leaver.

‘It transpired that Torty had climbed down my kitchen stairs, walked through the garden, onto a public footpath and was found motoring up the street on his way to the local train station, via the train tracks. He was spotted by a very Good Samaritan, who scooped him up and took him home, where he had a sleepover with a rabbit, which is probably the most exciting thing that’s happened to him in a decade.’

The blonde bombshell, whose parents are former actress Tessa Dahl and Carry On actor Julian Holloway, admits it’s not Torty’s first attempt to escape.

‘Last summer, Torty was found by a group of ramblers, walking up to the woods, a mile away from our house. The sun gives him the urge to move. Far away from us.

‘As soon as it gets hot, T is on an eternal quest for a lady tortoise. Although he’s chipped, he is a master escapologist and can dig, climb, and, it would appear, try to board trains.

‘He may be an ageing horny Houdini, but I was very happy when Jamie picked him up.

‘Thank you so much to all the dudes in our village that helped reunite us. He is now exhausted and fast asleep.’

Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood’s latest artistic inspiration is jewellery designer Madeleine Crewe-Read, 29, whose portrait he has drawn.

The picture was commissioned by Madeleine’s fiance Sam Sangster as a birthday present for his future wife. ‘I can die a happy woman,’ writes Madeleine alongside this picture posted on social media.

‘Ronnie with his Muse,’ jokes Sam, 30. Sam’s racing magnate father, Robert Sangster, had a very public fling with Jerry Hall while she was married to Mick Jagger. Of her ‘revenge affair’, Jerry declared: ‘Robert can buy him out ten times over.’

Dame Helen Mirren may look younger than her 72 years, but she is not in denial over her advancing age. The Oscar winner declares: ‘I am old and I look it, and do you know something? That’s just fine. Obviously, I try to look as nice as I can — and, of course, I’d love to look 20 years younger — but I don’t and never will. I’m not staying young, nobody does. I’m getting old because you do get old. That’s life.’

U.S. model Gigi Hadid was upstaged by her own mother at her 23rd birthday party this week.

Gigi, who recently split from ex-One Direction singer Zayn Malik, turned heads in a strapless gold Versace dress. But attention was diverted when her mum, reality TV star Yolanda Hadid, 54, turned up in a blingy Tom Ford gown.

While Gigi and sister Bella, 21, boast multi-million pound contracts with top fashion brands, Yolanda was keen to remind her eldest daughter of simpler times. Posting this snap of her as a baby on social media, she reflected: ‘When mommy used to be your full time photographer and stylist.’

As well as Yolanda and Bella (in a vintage Dior leopard print dress flecked with gold), Gigi was joined in New York by her real estate developer dad Mohamed Hadid, 69, who was divorced from Yolanda in 2000.

Actress Alice Eve, 36-year-old daughter of Shoestring star Trevor, unveiled a radical transformation at the New York premiere of her film, Untogether.

Hitherto blonde Alice dazzled onlookers with lustrous auburn locks and low-cut fringe, strikingly contrasted with a fuchsia pink gown into which a diamond panel had been cut.

Eve accused Bruce Jenner of ‘playing at being a woman’ three years ago when the former Olympic decathlon champion began the transition to becoming Caitlyn. Perhaps Alice can now give her some beauty tips.

Former bankrupt Grant Bovey, ex-husband of TV presenter Anthea Turner, must have thought his business could not go much lower after posting accounts which revealed it had just £3 in cash.

But figures for his ‘media representation’ company, Skydance Media, show it now has no cash at all. Worse still, the company owes creditors almost £90,000, according to new accounts.

The bulk of this is believed to relate to £82,430 ‘introduced’ into the company by Bovey, the sole director, and nearly £5,000 owed in tax. With just £8,200 owed by debtors and meagre assets of £12,000, Skydance now has losses of nearly £70,000, up from £53,000 last year.
