Homeland: Carrie Mathison sacrifices sanity for country on season seven finale of Showtime drama

Carrie Mathison sacrificed her sanity for her country on Sunday's season finale of Homeland.

The season seven finale titled Paean To The People saw the bipolar CIA agent played by Claire Danes, 39, buying time to get Simone Martin out of Russia.

The plan worked as Saul Berenson [Mandy Patinkin] was able to fly out of Russia with Simone after leaving Carrie behind as a decoy.

Lieutenant Colonel Yevgeny Gromov after believing he captured Simone was outraged to find it was Carrie and slugged her.

She smiled up at Yevgeny after learning Saul's plane had departed with Simone on board.

Saul, however, was shown looking forlornly out the plane window knowing that Carrie would be apprehended.

The episode then cut to three days later with Simone testifying before Congress that she was a Russian spy.

'I was part of a team sent here to disrupt the American political system by any means necessary,' Simone testified vindicating President Elizabeth Keane following her impeachment.

President Keane then met with Saul and his team and thanked them for getting Simone out.

'I am doing everything in my power to bring Carrie Mathison home. You have my solemn promise on that,' Keane told them.

Yevgeny pressured imprisoned Carrie to record a video apologizing to the Russian people in order to plant a seed of doubt about Simone's testimony.

He then pulled out a medicine bottle with Carrie's 'new medication' for her bipolar disorder.

'Am I supposed to be impressed?,' Carrie asked.

Yevgeny said she could either record the statement or go mad without her medication.

'I said no,' Carrie told him.

Carrie later asked her jailer Alexander for help getting her medication.

'I'll go insane. I would do anything, anything,' Carrie pleaded.

'I don't know if it's possible. I'll try,' he promised.

Alexander gave Carrie pills, but Yevgeny later cruelly informed her they were sugar pills and that Alexander had been promoted.

Keane meanwhile despite being vindicated went on television to announce she's resigning in order to heal the country's deep divide.

The show fast forwarded to seven months later with Saul at the Russian-Estonian Border for a prisoner exchange.

'I want to see her first with my own eyes,' Saul said.

He then confirmed it was Carrie despite her unkempt hair and nodded his head beginning the prisoner exchange.

Russian guards pushed Carrie away and she ran straight ahead and past Saul and then fell down.

Saul rushed over and picked her up.

'Carrie? Carrie? Are you all right? Carrie?,' Saul asked.

Carrie looking confused, scared and out of her mind said nothing while looking at Saul with darting eyes.
