Prince Charles stepped in for his mother the Queen to host a garden party at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. 

The royal, 69, was joined by his wife the Duchess of Cornwall, 70, and sister Princess Anne, 67, for the reception honouring hundreds of community leaders.  

The royals looked in excellent spirits as they mingled with guests in the grounds of the palace, with all three stopping to chat with small groups of people.

Supporters stood in crowds four-deep in the hope of catching a glimpse of Charles and jostled for position to take photos as he walked past. 

It is the third garden party hosted at Buckingham Palace so far this summer, with two more scheduled for June and July.

The Queen was on hand to welcome guests to the first two receptions however Prince Charles has long been scheduled to represent his mother at today's event. 

There is one more garden party scheduled to take place at Holyrood Palace next month.

Charles looked dapper in a grey morning suit, which he wore with a top hat and powder pink tie. 

While it was a sunny afternoon in London, Charles still came prepared with a black umbrella. 

Meanwhile his sister Anne was very much dressed for the sunshine, stepping out in a pair of wrap around shades.

Over the course of each year, The Queen welcomes over 30,000 guests to spend a relaxed summer afternoon in the beautiful gardens of Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Holyroodhouse. 

The garden parties serve are an important way for The Queen to speak to a broad range of people from all walks of life, all of whom have made a positive impact in their community.

At each Garden Party, around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed.
