America's Got Talent star Grace VanderWaal tells Teen Vogue that social media focuses too much on 'perfect lives'
Grace Vanderwaal is encouraging young women to stop comparing their lives to influencers on social media.
The American's Got Talent star talked to the new issue of Teen Vogue; it was the magazine's seventh and final cover in their music issue.
'I think that it's really hard for young girls right now because [on] social media, you can be anyone you want,' Vanderwaal began. 'I think they're growing up with these girls who have perfect, perfect lives, and so I want to be really open about how that's not how life works, and people are unsure about what they want and it's normal and it's OK.'

Vanderwaal hopes that her fans can relate to her music and learn to not only love their unique qualities, but to embrace them.
'I think everyone's just trying to be someone else nowadays,' the artist said. 'The world is so big and there's so many people and there's only one you, and that's so special and unique to think about.'
The 14-year-old began her musical career performing covers to her favorite songs on YouTube in her hometown of Suffern, New York. She later went on to win the 11th season of NBC's hit competition show America's Got Talent.
'At first it was so overwhelming and I had no idea what to do,' Vanderwaal said reflecting upon her start on the reality show. 'And now I feel so much better about my life, because, number one, I feel more headstrong about what I want.'
And although she is thankful for her experience and doesn't mind being remembered as the girl who won, the young artist hopes her fans will dig a little deeper into her current sound and upcoming projects.

'I mean, if you will forever remember me as the girl from America's Got Talent, that's cool, 'cause I am. If you wanna look into me and what I've done recently, that's cool, too. I don't really care at all, [because] at least you remember me and you're thinking about me,' she said.
Following her tour with Imagine Dragons, Vanderwaal plans to release four singles before releasing an EP with an additional two hits.
The young star is also set to make her acting debut in Disney's upcoming film Stargirl.
