She is the first woman of colour to have a lead role in the Star Wars franchise.
And as such Thandie Newton was perfectly placed to take her spot on the Diversity Session at the 65th Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity on Tuesday.
The Westworld actress wowed in a chic tuxedo as she sat next to British Vogue Editor Edward Enninful.

Thandie, 45, went shirtless under her plunging tuxedo which she teamed with statement heels, adorned with red bead detail.
Her hair was styled into tied-back braids and she added a glam touch of makeup.
Thandie joined the panel hosted by HP and Omnicom Group's Tiffany R. Warren, with Enninful, the first black male editor of Vogue.

The duo were keen to discuss diversity in advertising, with Edward pointing out: 'It's not enough for me to have that one black girl in a campaign. We need to employ people behind the scenes.'
'That's when real change happens. People who can go to the boardrooms and say, no guys, let's look at this race, let's look at that race. That's when advertising will truly be diverse.'
Thandie, who stars as Maeve Millay in HBO hit Westworld, added that she is frustrated when she sees 'the token black girl, the token Asian girl.' Yet the days are gone when advertisers can employ models who will say anything and brush over a company's lack of diversity.

'Social media is forcing people to reveal themselves. There is no longer a faceless brand,' she said. 'Brands have to reveal themselves, who's working for them, what's happening in those boardrooms.'
Thandie recently spoke out on her daughter Nico, 13, following her into acting after she landed a role in Tim Burton's re imagining of Disney classic Dumbo.
Discussing Nico's natural foray into acting, Thandie explained that her youngest offspring doesn't take the industry for 'granted' and proudly beamed that she's happy that the industry has changed for the better for younger women.

She shared: 'Having a mother and father in the industry… she’s been on endless sets. It’s not that she takes it for granted, but it’s not a world that she feels she’s not entitled to be in.
'[Plus] she has her mum right there like a lioness checking that everything is looked after. You can't stop the industry operating the way it has unless the truth comes out.
Adding: 'I feel this great relief, excitement for the women coming into this industry now.'
