Theresa May WINS crucial Brexit Bill vote as Tory rebels back down after last-ditch assurances that MPs will get a say over EU deal
The government defeated a potentially explosive amendment that would have allowed the Commons to overrule the PM by a margin of 319 to 303. The victory came after rebel ringleader Dominic Grieve effectively caved in after hours of frantic negotiations with ministers. A deal was finally reached after the government offered assurances that Speaker John Bercow will get the final say on the type of Parliamentary vote held if there is no deal struck with the EU. To cries of 'shame' from the Labour benches, Mr Grieve admitted ministers had not given significant ground, but said he had secured a way for the House to make its view on a Brexit deal 'clear'.

'Now bring them to court!' Families demand 'Dr Opiate' and her nurses face prosecution after damning inquiry reveals 'horrifying and unforgivable' early deaths of up to 650 patients at scandal-hit hospital
A damning report published today revealed 'a disregard for human life' at Gosport War Memorial hospital in Hampshire and 'a culture of shortening the lives of a large number of patients'. At least 450 people were found to have died prematurely between 1989 and 2000, the inquiry found, with an extra 200 probably affected before medical records went missing. The inquiry looked at the actions of Dr Jane Barton (top right), dubbed 'Dr Opiate', who oversaw the dishing out of the powerful painkillers at the hospital. She has since retired. Among those who died at the hospital were (left to right) Geoffrey Packman, Gladys Richards, Elsie Devine, Arthur Cunningham, Robert Wilson, Stan Carby, Jean Stevens and Edna Purnell.
BBC under fire to sack Lord Sugar after Apprentice star's 'misjudged' racist tweet likening Senegal football team to Marbella beach sellers sparks outrage
Lord Alan Sugar today sparked a huge race row after he posted a racist tweet comparing the Senegal World Cup squad to black beach sellers. Hundreds of people immediately slammed the 71-year-old Apprentice host, but he initially failed to back down, calling the reaction 'OTT' to what was a 'bloody joke'. The tweet was eventually removed 23 minutes later - but Lord Sugar insisted this was only because it was 'interpreted in the wrong way as offensive by a few people'. However, 82 minutes after posting the initial message, he admitted the tweet was 'misjudged' and his 'attempt at humour has backfired', saying he was 'very sorry'. Lord Sugar's position as host of the popular BBC TV programme - which has run for 13 seasons so far, with another on screen this autumn - could now come into doubt.

PICTURED: Ex-policewoman, 60, who froze to death after getting trapped naked in holiday home airing cupboard as neighbours ignored her banging because they thought it was workmen
Elizabeth Isherwood died from hypothermia after getting stuck in an airing cupboard while naked, having gotten lost while visiting the toilet in the middle of the night. The 60-year-old desperately tried to claw her way out 'over a number of days' after the door handle disintegrated at Plas Talgarth holiday complex in North Wales (inset). An inquest into her death heard how the former policewoman (pictured left and right) fought in vein to free herself by digging through the brickwork and ripping shelves from the wall. But in the process, Mrs Isherwood burst a pipe which caused water to rain down on her, speeding up the process of hypothermia and leading her to freeze to death. Her family revealed that Mrs Isherwood had managed to make a hole in one of the walls and was inches from freedom, but a picture hanging up on the other side of the wall disguised the opening in the plasterboard.

Friends of the three dead men have used social media to show them painting trains (right) - dubbed the 'holy grail'. Leeds Trinity University criminologist Nicola Harding, who has spent years studying graffiti artists in Britain and around the world, has said that street art is increasingly becoming a pursuit for the wealthy using social media like Instagram and YouTube (left) to gain notoriety. She told MailOnline: 'Graffiti writers aren't generally the 14 year old delinquent school boys we imagine, but older people working full time jobs, university students, or from more affluent backgrounds'. On the perilous spots some choose she said: 'Graffiti writing is as much about the danger of getting caught, the adrenaline of trespass and the danger of the situation, as it is the graffiti writing itself'.

War-time chaplain who gave troops 'one final gasper': Legendary WWI reverend dubbed 'Woodbine Willie' spent almost his entire salary on 865,000 cigarettes for sick and dying soldiers, says new research
'Woodbine Willie', the nickname of Reverend Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy (main, left and right), spent the equivalent of more than £43,000 on nearly 1million Woodbines (centre) for the Allied forces, a new book claims. Records also show that he regularly ventured - unarmed - into No Man's Land, often under heavy machine gun and artillery fire, to give dying troops one final 'gasper'. Biographer Dr Linda Parker (inset, left) spent five years researching Studdert Kennedy's life and estimates he gave away a staggering 865,000 cigarettes at his own expense. Over the course of nearly three years, between December 1915 and September 1918, Studdert Kennedy spent £43,249 - every spare penny of his Ministry of Defence salary, she believes.(Inset right, Studdert Kenendy's grandson, The Reverend Canon Andrew Studdert-Kennedy, who agrees with Parker's findings.)
