Stephen Anderton: How to get the cottage garden look
What makes a cottage garden? Maybe it’s plants that look very much at home, as if they are there for the long haul and not just for as long as they’re in fashion. They should look like they have been there long enough to be seeding themselves around into cracks and crannies, into steps and paving, in the bare space around shrubs or perennials, taking advantage of...What makes a cottage garden? On this day
In 1626 a religious treatise that had been found in the stomach of a fish was delivered to Cambridge University, eventually to be printed under the title Vox Piscis; in 1757 British troops under Robert Clive defeated the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey; in 1956 Gamal Abdel Nasser was confirmed as President of Egypt; in 1972 Anthony Barber, Edward Heath’s chancellor, announced that he would float the pound; in 1985 an Air India jet was destroyed by a terrorist bomb off the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people on board; in 1992 the New York crime boss John Gotti was sentenced to life imprisonment after his conviction for racketeering and murder.
Nature notes
As was expected, after the arrival of large numbers of rosy (or rose-coloured) starlings in western Europe, there has been a distinct spill-over of them into this country, and this week they have been seen in ones or twos in many places, including spacious gardens. These eastern European birds are just like our starlings, apart from their beautiful and dramatic pink breast and back (sightings from birdguides.com). Another unusual bird that has been seen this week is a great reed warbler. This is much larger than our reed warbler, almost the size of a song thrush, and has a very loud song. When it sings its jumble of raucous and piping notes from a reedbed, it drowns out the subdued, churring songs of our reed warblers. This bird has been singing at Fen Drayton Lakes RSPB reserve in Cambridgeshire and may still be there this weekend.
