VAR - THE BIG DEBATE
Groundbreaking - or breaking the game? Ronaldo's lucky escape was just the latest in string on decisions that went to replays.. so is VAR working at the World Cup?
As many predicted beforehand, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has become one of the major talking points of the World Cup in Russia. For better or worse the technology - and the sight of referees sprinting to the pitchside screen or of the uniformed officials in Moscow mission HQ - has become a familiar theme during the tournament. It's certainly sparked plenty of debate, with fans discussing whether it's being used too much or too little, whether referees have come to rely on it, and whether players are pressurising officials to check decisions. We take a look at some of the key decisions involving VAR during the World Cup so far - and a few that maybe warranted VAR referral but went unchecked.
LATEST ON ENGLAND'S WORLD CUP QUEST
Kane poses with proud parents and brother with hat-trick ball on day off from training
Harry Kane's family have been revelling in the England striker's hat-trick heroics, by posing with the match ball he fired into the Panama net three times in Sunday's 6-1 win. The England captain is the joint-top goalscorer at the World Cup with five after he added to his brace against Tunisia to help the Three Lions progress to the last-16. Kane's parents Kim and Pat, and brother Charlie, were in Nizhny Novgorod for the match on Sunday and they have been basking in Harry's glory since the victory.
'A week after I scored my-hat-trick, I presented a car at a bingo hall in Ilford. They introduced me as "George Hurst"! I doubt the same will happen to Harry': Sir Geoff Hurst on being a World Cup legend:
ADAM CRAFTON: In a World Cup year, Hurst's views always take on deeper significance but Harry Kane's exploits mean one of his records is now shared more widely. Kane's hat-trick in the 6-1 victory over Panama on Sunday saw the Tottenham striker become only the third Englishman to score three in a World Cup game - joining Hurst, who scored a hat-trick against West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final and Gary Lineker against Poland in 1986.
Lukaku misses training again as Belgium face series of huge selection decisions ahead of crunch showdown with England
Belgium's stars trained today without their four-goal striker Romelu Lukaku (top left), who was again missing from training after having a scan on his injured ankle. Manager Roberto Martinez (right) is preparing his team to face England on Thursday in a Kaliningrad shoot-out for first place in Group G - but they are facing a number of selection issues for the match that will decide who finishes top. Eden Hazard (bottom left, with Axel Witsel) is among a group of players who are uncertain to feature.
Enter the warriors! England stars unwind with yoga and massages as they start preparation for decider with Belgium
Gareth Southgate's England squad have been limbering up in the gym following their impressive 6-1 demolition job of Panama on Sunday. The Three Lions stars were treated to a yoga session and massages to help with their recovery from the emphatic victory which saw Harry Kane bag a hat-trick against the South Americans in Nizhny Novgorod. After returning to their base camp on Sunday evening, Southgate booked his players in for the recovery session to keep on top of the sore muscles, aches and pains they will have picked up in the group stage game.
WORLD CUP
Quaresma is the heavily-tattooed nomad with his own trademark 'trivela' shot... and he is finally fulfilling his potential aged 34
JOE BERNSTEIN: The World Cup is the best place to gain an audience. The Cruyff turn, Mexican wave and Bebeto's baby celebration were copied around the globe and now it's the turn for kids everywhere to mimic the Quaresma trivela after his sensational goal against Iran. So, who is Ricardo Quaresma, the 34-year-old maverick who has played for some of Europe's biggest clubs including Barcelona and Chelsea, but hadn't started a World Cup match until Monday night in Saransk?
New ball please! World Cup turns from black to red as Adidas reveal design for the knockout stages
Adidas has released the first pictures of the match ball to be used in the knockout stages of the World Cup in Russia. The 'Telstar Mechta' is fit with a 'vivid red design' which, according to the sports company, is supposed to reflect the colours of the host nation and the 'rising heat' of knockout football. Throughout the tournament so far, the black-and-white Telstar 18 has been used. But that ball will be replaced at the end of the group stages.
Iranian women were allowed to watch Portugal clash on big screen in Tehran despite ban... but hardliners brand singing and dancing 'disrespectful'
Iranian women were allowed to watch their national team playing in their World Cup match against Portugal on a big screen in a Tehran stadium on Monday, Iran's ISNA news agency reported, despite a ban backed by hardliners. Since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, women have been barred from attending male football matches, based partly on the idea that they should be shielded from hearing male fans swearing and cursing. 'Those individuals and families who have bought tickets, can attend the stadium to watch the World Cup game live,' ISNA quoted a statement published by Tehran's governor office.
France vow to make Denmark boss eat his words as Pogba and Co train for decider with pre-World Cup insults fresh in memory
Dider Deschamps insisted his France team will not be inclined to do Denmark any favours in their Group C decider on Tuesday with stinging Danish insults still ringing in Les Bleus' ears. Denmark manager Age Hareide was particularly withering of Deschamps and some of his leading men prior to departure to Russia. Three weeks on, as Hareide's side face France at the Luzhniki in need of a point to secure progress to the last 16, his barbs may come back to bite him. The veteran Norwegian labelled France as 'nothing special' in a pre-tournament interview before lampooning Paul Pogba in particular.
Australia show off their handling skills ahead of must-win Peru clash as Ryan plans to pay for family to stay in Russia for last-16 tie
Australia may be less than 24 hours away from one of the biggest matches in their history, but you wouldn't know it from their final training session. Instead of focusing purely on their tactics for Tuesday's must win World Cup clash against Peru, Bert van Marwijk's men turned goalkeepers in Sochi. Tim Cahill and Co were pictured showing off their ball-handling skills in a light-hearted game, with Mile Jedinak and Aaron Mooy among those also involved.
Brazil players greeted by fans letting off flares and tear gas as they arrive in Moscow ahead of Serbia clash
Brazil may not have set the 2018 World Cup alight on the field yet, but their fans are doing their best to brighten the tournament up. The Brazilian squad arrived in Moscow on Monday night ahead of their final Group E game against Serbia at the Spartak Stadium. They were greeted by a huge group of Brazilian supporters, lighting up the dark streets with a sea of green and yellow.
Salah's pointless World Cup: Egypt's final agony as they are beaten by Saudi Arabia at the death
EGYPT 1-2 SAUDI ARABIA - LAURIE WHITWELL: This was a most peculiar match, a dead rubber with plenty of live issues. We were given the wonderful sight of the World Cup’s oldest ever player making a gymnastic penalty save to defy his years. We experienced a referee Harry Kane had the misfortune to encounter handily exposing the lengthy delays VAR can cause. And we got a palpable expression of Mohamed Salah’s current mood towards his country’s FA. Salah is said to be furious with Egypt for placing him in position to be used politically by Chechnya leader Ramzan Kadyrov and is considering quitting. The highly muted manner of his celebration after an opening goal of intuitive brilliance gave us a window into his mind.
Harden picks up NBA MVP award in garish suit as Simmons wins Rookie trophy and Oladipo is named Most Improved Player
James Harden picked up the NBA's Most Valuable Player award on Monday night after twice finishing as runner-up in previous years. The Houston Rockets star beat out four-time winner LeBron James and Anthony Davis of the Pelicans at the NBA Awards on Monday night. Harden, wearing a garish beige suit with black accents on Monday night, joined Michael Jordan as the only players to average at least 20 points, eight assists, five rebounds and 1.7 steals in a season.
