A 20-year-old man has been arrested today in connection with the murder of a football fan who was repeatedly knifed on a bus.

Richard Whelan, from Kentish Town, north London, was stabbed several times on the top deck of a No43 bus as he made his way home from a night out in Islington.

The 28-year-old, who was with his girlfriend, was taken to the nearby Whittington Hospital where he died.

The man was arrested in Surrey this morning and taken to a London police station where he remains in custody.

He was allegedly attacked after he challenged another passenger who was throwing food around. Media reports said Mr Whelan had objected to the man after he threw chips at his girlfriend.

Police have examined footage from a security camera on the bus and have spoken to several witnesses.
