Firefighters have evacuated homes which are directly in the path of a wildfire blazing out of control across Saddleworth Moor in Greater Manchester, centre. The blaze was reported on Sunday night and firefighters initially thought they had successfully battled the blaze. Last night, the fire continued to illuminate the sky, top left, as firefighters continued to battle with the flames, bottom left. According to the Met Office, firefighters tackling the blaze, right, which has seen smoke drift some 20 miles away, will receive little relief from the weather as temperatures over the next 48 hours are expected to reach 86C. The current heatwave has been caused by high pressure from southern Europe. Residents in affected areas have been told to keep their doors and windows shut and listen to local radio for updates. Those with respiratory conditions have been warned against going out into the smoke. Ash has been reported falling from the sky in Bolton, more than 10 miles from the fire.

Takeaway owner fined after schoolgirl died from severe allergic reaction

York police forced to smash into car to free two sweltering dogs

The Labrador-type dogs (inset and right) were freed by two officers after they had been left inside the vehicle at a car park at York Hospital in the city centre for 30 minutes yesterday under blazing sunshine. The two officers at the scene said they could feel the heat coming from the car during their rescue operation (main) as temperatures in Britain peaked at 86.2F (30.1C). They even said they 'struggled to breathe' when they were inside the car for just 30 seconds after they broke in. North Yorkshire Police confirmed today no-one has been arrested over the incident, and the investigations were being carried out by the RSPCA. A spokesman for the RSPCA confirmed the dogs are now in their care.

These are the amazing scenes as USAF F-15E Strike Eagles were seen flying through the Mach Loop in north Wales earlier today. The fighters dropped to as low as 250ft during their training flight. The area is popular with plane spotters who can climb to the top of a hill and watch the fighter jets and attack helicopters blast through the valley below. Military pilots need to learn to fly low in order to avoid enemy radar if ever faced with flying in a combat zone. By flying low, they are able to mask their aircraft using the terrain.

At least 20 people are 'seriously injured' after crash on the A47 

A bus driver and a passenger have died and 12 people have been injured in a horror crash between a double decker bus and a lorry today. Five bus passengers suffered serious injuries and seven were left with minor injuries in the collision on the A47 in Guyhirn, Cambridgeshire at 7.30am. The driver of the bus, a man in his 50s from Norfolk, and a passenger in his 70s from Northampton, died at the scene. Pictures from the scene show the aftermath with a jackknifed HGV wrapped around the front of the double decker. Police confirmed none of the seriously injured passengers were wearing seat belts at the time, but could not state whether this included the driver.

Amnesty International, which led the 'Justice For Noura' campaign, said Sudan must reform child marriage laws following the decision. She was the victim of a 'brutal attack' by her husband and acted in self defence, said Amnesty's regional deputy director Seif Magango. 'The Sudanese authorities must take this opportunity to start reforming the laws around child marriage, forced marriage and marital rape, so that victims are not the ones who are penalised,' Magango's statement read.

Hermit who lived on deserted island for 29 years is returned to Japan

Japanese authorities denied a man the chance his wish to die a castaway on an island he called home for three decades. Masafumi Nagasaki was the only inhabitant of the kilometre-wide Sotobanari island but was forced to return to civilisation after being found unwell by police. He lived in solitude since 1989 and became known as the 'naked hermit' after being discovered by a traveller who writes about castaways. Alvaro Cerezo told news.com.au Nagasaki was evicted after someone found him on the island looking 'weak'. Police were called and he has been taken to live in a government house 60km away in Ishigaki city. Nagasaki's story first came to light in 2012. He shunned mainstream society in the early nineties to set up base on the little island of Sotobanari where there is no running water.
