I would do anything for… him to stop singing: The bizarre moment an MP belts out a Meat Loaf song in Parliament - before the Speaker shuts him up

  • Solomon MP Luke Gosling took an interesting approach in Federal Parliament
  • Mr Gosling used words from a Meat Loaf song hammer point on self government
  • Darwin politician was speaking about 40th anniversary of Territory Day in July

A Labor MP has taken the extraordinary step of singing a Meat Loaf cover in parliament.

The member for Solomon Luke Gosling stood up in the House of Representatives and belted out lines from the American crooner's late 1970s hit 'Two out of Three Ain't Bad' with his own twist.

The Darwin-based Labor backbencher was speaking about the upcoming 40th anniversary of Territory Day and as such wore a safari suit, which was allowed in the NT's Legislative Assembly in July 1978 after Canberra had granted it self government.

'This Sunday is Territory Day and it was on this year 40 years ago that the Northern Territory got limited self government,' he said.

Mr Gosling, a former military officer who holds a marginal seat, lyrically praised the Northern Territory to finish his point about self-government, stretching from Australia's red centre to the tropical Top End.

‘We want you, we need you, but there ain't no way we’re ever going to give up on full rights for the NT, but don’t be sad because two out of three ain't bad,' he sang.

Other MPs could be heard enjoying the upbeat display after question time but the Speaker was forced to cut Mr Gosling off before the end.

After the session Mr Gosling, a first-term MP, took to social media to share video of the moment and to reiterate his point.

'Forty years ago in 1978 the Territory gained limited self government and the right to wear safari suits in the NT Parliament,' he said.

'I spoke today of our celebration of our beloved Territory and called for full self government for the NT.'

Mark Latham, now a centre-right media commentator, was the last federal Labor leader to profess a love of Meat Loaf, a political conservative who identifies with the American Republican Party.
