Woman Walks Ahead is a dramatic period piece based on a true story.

The film follows Catherine Weldon, a portrait painter, as she travels to North Dakota from 1890s Brooklyn.

Weldon sets out to paint Sitting Bull, a Native American Chief, and unavoidably becomes entangled in the land battle between the Lakota people and the United States.

'When I read the script, I was blown away by the story of Catherine,' Jessica said in an interview with THR. 'I love history and I was shocked that I'd never heard about her.

'I did some studying and I realized it is true. There was a Catherine Weldon who 30 years before women had the right to vote traveled to North Dakota and developed this very deep friendship and love with Sitting Bull.'

The movie hits select theaters on June 29.
