He was joined by Noah Jupe, 13, who plays the young Shia, and he scurried to keep up with Shia as he walked quickly along the sidewalk.

According to IMDB, the story follows a young Shia - a child star - as he attempts to mend his relationship with his alcoholic father who has a criminal past.

Jeffrey was convicted of attempted rape in the early 1980s, and has since dealt with a slew of personal issues.

The Transformers actor penned the script for the film under the pseudonym Otis Lort and used fictional names to tell the story of his upbringing and relationship with his father, who nicknamed him Honey Boy.

Shia has been outspoken about his past issues with his father, who he named James Lort in the film.

The star used the Black List, an online market for entertainment industry professionals, to pitch the movie, describing it as the story of 'a child actor and his law-breaking, alcohol-abusing father [attempting] to mend their contentious relationship over the course of a decade.'

Shia told Esquire in March that many of his issues stem from the complicated father-son dynamic. He said: 'A lot of my s*** has to do with my relationship with my dad. That dude is my gasoline.'
