It comes as the temperature record for the year was smashed this afternoon, with 89F (31.9C) registered in Portmadog in Wales. The sweltering conditions (sunbathers in Weston-super-Mare, left) even caused Barton Swing Bridge in Salford, Lancashire to expand, forcing firemen to douse the expanded metal frame in cold water for half an hour to get it to return to normal. The blistering heat was even blamed for turning tap water into a strange milky colour (inset) in some parts of north Wales.

The British Army has been called in to help firefighters battle 20ft flames on Saddleworth Moor as the blaze rages on for the fourth day amid a blazing heatwave in the UK. Amelia Cooper, 15 months old, was found dead in her mother Sara Talbot's bed in Cornwall in June of 2016. A coroner has now been told her likely cause of death was caused by coming into contact with her mother's pain relief patch after sharing a bed with her. A fentanyl opioid patch, which is stronger than morphine, can cause seizures, a reduction in breathing and blood pressure, and when levels are high, it can be fatal. Fentanyl is often added to heroin because it creates the same high as the drug, with the effects identical, but it can be up to 50 times more potent than heroin. It is thought the patch was stuck to Amelia's skin for a 'period of time', allowing the drug to seep into her tiny body.

The Duke of Cambridge was today accompanied by an extraordinary security detail (top) as he went for a walkabout around Ramallah, following a historic meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. A Chinese court yesterday sentenced two drug dealers to death in front of hundreds of people. The two criminals received the verdict on a sports ground in Haikou, southern China's Hainan Province, before being put to execution immediately. Many of the spectators were young students who were organised to watch the public sentencing rally wearing school uniforms, according local media.

Love Island star Sophie Gradon's parents have said their 'hearts are broken' following her death aged 32. The reality star, who appeared in the 2016 series of the ITV2 dating show, was found dead in Ponteland, Northumberland, last Wednesday. Her parents, Colin and Deborah Gradon, said in a statement to the Press Association: 'It has been one week since we lost our precious daughter and we as a family are still coming to terms with our sudden loss. Ali Sezer was enjoying the sunshine from the step outside of his shop, Ali Barber, when a car swerved off Westoe Road in South Shields, South Tyneside, and smashed into a lamppost. The red Nissan Juke then spun 180 degrees - with the rear end of the vehicle only just missing the 38-year-old. Mr Sezer was not injured in the terrifying incident. The driver, believed to be in his 70s, may have had a seizure when his car, travelling at 'between 30 and 40mph', hit the lamppost - and he was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fleetwood Mac star Christine McVie (inset) has put her luxury London apartment on the market with a £3.6 million price tag. Drivers in Turkey are bracing for heavy summer storms that last year damaged hundreds of thousands of cars and left insurance agencies reeling. Last July, torrential rainfall and hail battered the capital of Istanbul and swamped insurance agencies with around 150,000 claims. This summer, agencies are warning drivers to park in garages in order to avoid damage and some drivers are taking no chances.

Maya Clanton, a graphic designer from North Carolina, was filmed by her friend Nakeya as she was driven home from hospital. Maya had been given nitrous oxide ('laughing gas') to ease the pain during the operation, which would have lasted around 45 minutes. At one point she exclaimed she couldn't blink because they 'hit a nerve in my eye!'.

BT called in experts when a customer complained that the new dark green ruined the look of his picturesque 16th century home in Stanstead near Long Melford, Suffolk. The firm painted the green cabinet to blend in with the flint wall of the former village pub - rendering it near invisible. Ervin Xhafa was shocked to find that BT had put up the 120cm high by 120cm wide box right in front of his Grade Two listed house. The communications giant did not need to get permission from Mr Xhafa - or the local council - to put up the cabinet.
