        What is Amazon Prime Day?

        How does it work?

Amazon Prime Day is a day of massive price reductions across the Amazon website. Products on sale will come from across Amazon’s whole range, including homewares and fashion, tech gadgets, books, and even games and toys. Amazon’s own Kindle and Echo brands will also be included in the sale. Most of the discounts will be available for one day only, so it’s important to be prepared. Amazon runs two types of promotion on Prime Day. There are Deals of the Day which run for the whole day, and Lightning Deals which are available for a very limited time only. Amazon Prime Day deals are only available to Amazon Prime members. This means that you must join Prime in order to take advantage of the low prices on Prime Day.

        What to expect?

Amazon Prime Day deals and discounts

We expect Amazon’s own brand products to take centre stage at this year’s Prime Day, with big discounts on the Echo and Kindle ranges. In previous sales Amazon has slashed the prices of its Echo Dot speaker and Kindle Fire tablets, and we expect those prices to come down again this July.

On Prime Day 2017 these were some of the deals available on Amazon own brand devices:

        Amazon products
        • The Echo Dot was reduced from £49.99 down to £34.99.
        • The larger Echo was reduced by 50%, from £149.99 down to £79.99.
        • The Kindle Fire 8 tablet was reduced from £79.99 to £49.99.
        • The Kindle Fire 7 was reduced from £49.99 down to just £29.99.
        • Kindle Fire Kids Edition tablets were discounted, with the Fire 7 Kids Edition at £69.99, down from £99.99, and the Fire 8 Kids Edition at £89.99, down from £129.99.
        • The Kindle Paperwhite e-reader was reduced from £109.99 to £79.99.

Aside from Amazon’s own brand products, in previous years Prime Day has brought discounts on a range of tech items including laptops, mobile phones, headphones and video games consoles. Discounts like these make Prime Day a great opportunity to smarten up your home.

Some of the most popular promotions on Prime Day 2017 were:

        • 50% off Philips Hue smart lightbulbs.
        • Microsoft Surface Pro 4 laptop reduced to £479.99.
        • Philips Fidelio L1 headphones at £180 off.
        • Oral-B Smart Series 6000 CrossAction Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush reduced to £50.49 from £229.99.
        • 40% off designer fashion from Calvin Klein, Gant and Tommy Hilfiger.
        • Motorola MBP48 5 inch Video Baby Monitor reduced to £79.99, down from £109.99.
        Amazon other products

Amazon has yet to announce the 2018 Prime Day deals, and we expect many of the deals to be announced as they are released on Prime Day, without any advance warning. For this reason, we recommend planning your shopping and being prepared to spend time on the Amazon website on Prime Day.

        Are the deals really real?

Amazon Prime Day deals and discounts

While Amazon is known for changing the prices of its products on a regular basis, you can definitely find some good deals on Prime Day. Amazon typically reduces prices on its own brand products several times a year, such as on Black Friday and on Prime Day. So you’ll find the Echo and Kindle ranges cheaper on Prime Day than on most other days of the year.

You can track the fluctuating prices of products on Amazon on the website CamelCamelCamel. By entering an Amazon UK web address or keywords you can find out whether the same product has previously been sold at a lower or higher price. For example, if you search for Kindle Paperwhite, you can see that while the current price is £109.99, the e-reader was previously sold for £79.99 in November 2017, around the date of the Black Friday sale. The price has also fluctuated between £89.99 and £109.99. Using this price tracker you can find out if the prices you see on Amazon Prime Day are real discounts compared to the previous pricing of the same products.

We consider that Prime Day does offer real deals, with discounts equivalent to the deals on other sale days. Compared to normal shopping days you can definitely find a bargain on Prime Day.
