James Martin proves it IS hot enough to cook an egg on a car bonnet in 26-degree heat (but viewers are more worried about the damage to the Mercedes)

  • This Morning tested out the bizarre experiment live on the daytime show
  • Holly and Phil watched on as TV chef James cracked the egg on the car
  • The trio got excited by the possibility of a breakfast snack outside
  • Sadly it took 15 minutes for the egg to scramble fully in the London heat

ITV's This Morning has proved that it is hot enough to cook an egg on a car bonnet.

As the UK basks in a glorious heatwave with temperatures reaching the high twenties, TV chef James Martin was tasked with whipping up the dish using just a black Mercedes.

Presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield watched as James cracked open the yolk on top of the hot car but it failed to cook.

They made a second attempt with the chef vigorously shaking the egg before spreading it all over the bonnet, explaining how it would end up scrambled.

At first the experiment failed, but 15 minutes later with time to bake in the 26-degree London weather it was a success.

Phillip explained that they had asked permission from a chap named Willy to test out the theory that you could cook an egg in the summer temperatures and warned others not to repeat it at home.

As their attempts to get it to start cooking grew increasingly worse each time, Phillip quipped: 'This is a ridiculous idea.'

'Forget fried egg, it's scrambled egg,' said James in a desperate bid to make it a success.

Holly was worried about the damage to the motor, before Phillip brought in Willy who said he 'loved eggs'.

James added: 'I reckon give it ten or fifteen minutes and it'll be cooked.'

After an ad break they revisited Willy who was stood by the egg which had dried in the sun on his car.

However viewers weren't particularly impressed with the segment, instead distracted by the damage the experiment would do to the expensive vehicle.

'Ruin the paintwork of a perfectly good Mercedes Benz!' said one.

'Did you know that eggs have a certain acid in them that damages Car paint!' pointed out another.

One viewer moaned: 'Frying eggs on the bumper of a car wow on This Morning.

'Of course now stupid kids will be doing this all over. How long before someone crashes due to an eggy windscreen.'

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10.30am
