Demi Lovato gives emotional first performance of Sober... and declares she is 'a new person'

Demi Lovato sang her confessional new song Sober for the first time since revealing she had relapsed after six years of sobriety.

The 25-year-old performed the song on Sunday at the Rock in Rio Lisboa Festival in Portugal, where the crowd roared with adoration as she kicked off the song.

But as the tune went on, Demi appeared to be fighting back tears.

Afterwards, Demi tweeted a video of the performance with the caption, 'Tonight I took the stage, a new person with a new life. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. It will never be forgotten.'

The emotional moment on stage came as Demi sang the lyrics: 'And I’m sorry for the fans I lost. Who watched me fall again. I want to be a role model, but I’m only human.'

'Momma, I'm so sorry. I'm not sober anymore,' she sings in the chorus. 'And daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor.'

When the song ended the crowd chanted, 'We love you, we love you.'

The pop star, who has been about her struggles with addiction, mental illness and disordered eating, celebrated six years sober March 15.

She shared the raw details of her alcohol and drug abuse back in October when YouTube released her documentary Simply Complicated.

'My dad was an addict and an alcoholic,' she explained. 'Guess I always searched for what he found in drugs and alcohol because it fulfilled him and he chose that over a family.'

Demi checked into rehab for the first time in 2010. She returned to a sober facility three years later for additional therapy.

'I got no excuses,' she says in her latest single. 'I wanna be a role model, but I'm only human.'

After Monday's show in London, Demi's Tell Me You Love Me world tour heads to Italy for a show on Wednesday at the Bologna Unipol Arena.
