Topshop has cashed in on the success of its cult favourite polka dot dress by re-releasing the style in cobalt blue - and it's already sold out online.

The £59 Jacquard Stripe Pinafore Dress is a fresh take on the original black and white Mix Spotted Midi dress, which sold out when it hit stores in January - and again once it was restocked in May for the start of summer.

It is now only available second-hand, with eBay vendors charging as much as £200 for the must-have.

A second iteration of the dress - in the reverse black with white polka dots - was also quickly snapped up.

So it is of little wonder fashion fans snapped at the chance to add the frock to their wardrobe when it was re-released in cobalt blue on Wednesday.

The stunning cobalt blue midi dress sold out in some sizes within hours and is now completely out of stock online.

The shopping frenzy came even though the £59 dress is nearly £10 more expensive than the original.

A description on the Topshop website reads: 'If you loved our monochrome spot pinafore dress, you will be sure to love this cobalt blue stripe design.

'Created in a jacquard design and in a fashion-forward cut, this flowy dress will be your go-to option for weekends and more.'

The online shopping image shows the plunging dress styled with silver earrings and simple black strap sandals.

The original dress, popularised by TOWIE's Chloe Lewis and seen on bloggers like Kate Wright, was white with different sized black polka dots.

It is now fetching bids up to four times the original price on auction site eBay as fans scramble to get hold of it.

A size 10-12 appears to be fetching the highest price while dresses in a size 8 and 14+ are commanding more reasonable bids of less than £100 - but still double the original price.

It was followed by the black with white polka dot version.

The Viscose dress is reflective of the polka dot trend seen on the catwalks of Dior, Valentino and Balenciaga this Spring.

This is not the first item to cause a stir among Topshop customers with the high-street store seeing a similar reaction to a striped dress last month.
