She added: 'At the premiere, you got the feeling from the energy that something was happening. It was a huge response.

'I feel grateful to be a part of that and to have worked with [John]. We've stayed friends ever since.'

John also spoke warmly about his longtime friendship with Olivia.

'When you share that kind of meteoric success - and nothing has been able to exceed it - you share a bond,' the 64-year-old said.

'I've been through her having a child, getting divorced, losing her sister. She's been through my getting married, having children. It's wonderful and full of shared memories.'

While fans have long held out hope for a Grease reunion, Olivia previously admitted she thinks 'it's a bit too late now'.

Love, laughter and tears: 'We did something life changing, making that film,' Olivia, 69, said on Thursday. ''I feel grateful to be a part of that and to have worked with [John]'. Pictured in 2012

'I think it's a bit late now. What would you do? Put us in a nursing home? I can't imagine that working now but you never know,' Olivia said.

'If there was a great idea then, of course, we would consider it, or at least I would.'

She added: 'If John was up for it then I think I would be too, but we couldn't do it without each other. Let's see what the future brings.'

Last month, fellow Grease's star Didi Conn - who played Frenchy in the movie - revealed John's not-so-secret crush on Olivia during filming.

She told MailOnline: 'Oh yeah [he did fancy her].

'What was so much fun was that most of us were older than the characters we were playing so we just stayed in character all day long.
