Ed Sheeran showed his support for good friend Sir Elton John when he attended his AIDS Foundation ball - marking its 25th anniversary.

But there must have been a shortage of chairs as the 27-year-old Shape Of You hitmaker sat on his lap at the Argento ball in Windsor, while talking to him. 

The friendly encounter comes just four months after Elton was mocked by fans for pronouncing his surname incorrectly during a video message at the BRITs.

Ed wrote in his book Ed Sheeran: A Visual Journey: 'I’d probably had about seven missed calls before I got a text from my manager saying: “Pick up your phone! It’s Elton!”

Elton, who was clad in a Gucci suit, pink sparkly glasses and monogrammed shoes on the night, has acted as a mentor for Ed and helped run his management company, Rocket.

He also warned the crooner that his success won't last forever, talking about it in an interview with George Ezra.

He said: 'You have a heyday and you have a rest, and the heyday can never be replaced.

Talking about his own success, he said: 'After that I had the common sense to know I’m not going to have a No.1 every time straight away. 

'I knew someone else would take over. It’s cyclical.

'Ed will go through that and I’ve talked to him about it. I’ve said, There’ll come a time where this won’t happen every time and you have to accept that".'

Elton deemed the chart-topper his 'close friend', when he presented him with the coveted Global Success award via video link at the BRITs in February. 

But despite the confession, Elton John appeared to mispronounce Ed's name at the   - leaving fans confused.

While the singer is widely referred to as Ed 'Sheer-un', he introduced his pal as Ed 'Shi-ran', which viewers immediately mocked on Twitter.

Speaking via video link, the Your Song star said: 'I couldn't miss the opportunity to talk about one of my dear friends.

'From the very first time I heard Ed Sheeran, I knew he'd be a huge star across the world. Last year he played by his third album Divide in London and I thought, Shape Of You, monster hit.'

However, as he continued with his tribute, fans were instead distracted by his pronunciation of the singer's name as 'Shi-ran' - and joked of the blunder on Twitter.

While others added: 'Elton john put ya teeth in bab, I have NEVER heard ed sheeran be pronounced like that!' and 'Did Elton John just make Ed Sheeran sound like a Wine Bottle?' 

Further fans poked fun at the fact the mishap occurred immediately after Elton deemed Ed a 'dear friend'.
