Piers took to Twitter on Friday after his Good Evening Britain special with Susanna Reid made headlines with its star-studded lineup, including guest Danny Dyer who became a social media sensation with his rant calling David Cameron a 't**t.'

Posting a mocked-up snap of him furiously pointing at an image of some of Love Island's bikini-clad lineup, he wrote: 'BOOM! Good Evening Britain peaked at 5.2m viewers last night, smashing Love Island which peaked at just 3.6m. Thanks for watching & restoring my faith in humanity!'

Overall Love Island narrowly came out on top in the ratings war with 3.2 million, though its peak of 3.6 million was the highest ever for ITV2, smashing the previous nights record of 3.4 million, when Essex beauty Zara McDermott was shockingly dumped from the Island.

Piers has never held back from putting across his views surrounding Love Island, and has even called its stars 'brain-dead zombies' and 'vacuous Z-list celebrities.'

His meeting with guest Danny Dyer - whose daughter Dani is currently starring on Love Island - was expected to spark fireworks, and it didn't disappoint as the pair went head-to-head with their thoughts on the Mallorca- based reality show.

Piers jokingly said: 'You may have been led to believe, through social media, that I've spent the last three weeks calling every contestant on Love Island, a bunch of brain-dead zombies.

'Obviously, I'd like to clarify, that doesn’t include anyone in the villa called Dani Dyer, which I believe is your daughter, there's been a terrible misunderstanding. She is obviously a shining oasis of intelligence, beauty and grace.'

To which Danny quipped: 'Yeah, just stop talking, Piers, stop talking, rambling on, I’m sorry, Piers. Just calm down, stop getting so emotional.'

He said: 'Yeah, my daughter is on Love Island, Piers, it's a nutty thing. I didn't want her to do it, I'd never seen it before - you fear as a father. But what it is, is entertainment.

'It is what it is, it's a game show, there's £50,000 at stake, it's a lot of dough, and Dani's gonna win it. She's gonna nick the reddies.'

Danny went on to defend the 'brain-dead' contestants and he said: 'Listen, all I can speak for is my daughter.

'They're not all idiots, one of them is an A&E doctor, right? I can't believe I'm on here fighting for Love Island. Listen, at the end of the day, it was her decision, she's a grown adult and a smart kid.

'I've always believed, you don't teach a kid what to think, you teach them how to think. I'm a very liberal parent, she's gone on there and span it on its head.'
