Uruguay 2-1 Portugal: Cavani's superb double sends Ronaldo home

URUGUAY 2-1 PORTUGAL - OLIVER HOLT AT THE FISHT OLYMPIC STADIUM: Many had hoped this would be the day when Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi wrote new chapters in their World Cup histories and advanced with Portugal and Argentina to one last battle in the quarter-final in Nizhny Novgorod next weekend. But it did not happen. Uruguay and France progressed instead. For the first time in the careers of both men, there was a sense that a chapter had closed. Messi will be 35 by the time of the next World Cup in Qatar and Ronaldo will be 37 but as they came to terms with the eliminations of their countries, they knew that they had failed to score a single goal in the knock-out phases of the World Cups they had played. It is unlikely they will be back. They are not used to ambitions being thwarted but success in the greatest tournament of all has eluded them both.

France 4-3 Argentina: Mbappe brace seals World Cup quarter-final place

IAN HERBERT AT THE KAZAN ARENA: The talk had been about a No 10 who was supposedly predestined to drive his nation on and on, confounding every setback along the road. 'El General de Gol' was how Buenos Aires paper 'Ole' encapsulated Argentinian matchday belief in Lionel Messi. But it was the individual wearing a blue 10 who won a searing, breathless game with a performance which will come to define this tournament.  Kylian Mbappe capitalised on a creaking, aged, inadequate Argentinian defence to score twice in four devastating second half minutes.

Lionel Messi's dream of winning the World Cup has come to an end after France sent Argentina crashing out of the tournament in a seven-goal thriller in Kazan.

A thrilling encounter full of long range strikes, defensive errors and attacking brilliance ended with the French triumphing. Here, Sportsmail rate the players in Kazan...

He may have already announced himself to the football world but in Kazan on Saturday, Kylian Mbappe made his most telling contribution on the biggest stage of his fledgling career.

When the 2018 World Cup was awarded to Russia and Qatar won the right to host the tournament in 2022, it sounded like the death knell for international football.

Kylian Mbappe may still be in his teenage years, but he has already shown enough talent to be considered a complete striker, according the goal-scoring legend that is Didier Drogba.

Mascherano announced his retirement from international football on Saturday, in what could be the first of a series of mass departures following the nation’s disastrous World Cup campaign.

Subbuteo and unicorns: Southgate’s battle to banish fear of failure

SPECIAL REPORT BY ROB DRAPER IN ST PETERSBURG: The video nasty starts at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, which is maybe an odd place for the England football team to begin. Most of them wouldn’t have any memory of that calamitous Games in which Great Britain won just one gold medal. But when the squad first assembled after Gareth Southgate had taken over the job full-time in 2017, he sat them down to show them the specially-made film. Apart from the Atlanta footage, there were more relevant scenes: a World Cup quarter-final knock-out in Mexico 1970, the end of Sir Alf Ramsey against Poland in 1973, penalty shoot out woes in 1990, 1996 (featured the manager in a starring role), 1998, 2004 and 2006; Ronaldinho’s free kick in 2002; and the Iceland debacle in 2016.

Kieran Trippier is the Bury boy who bends it just like David Beckham

Perhaps they will have to make a sequel, Bend It Like Trippier. Tottenham’s defender-cum-wing-back has played a part in four of England’s World Cup goals so far in the manner of David Beckham, and ranked second in the group stages for successful crosses and corners, ahead of luminaries such as Neymar, Isco and Kevin De Bruyne. Not bad for a 27-year-old lad from Bury who was older than Dele Alli or Raheem Sterling are now before he made his first Premier League appearance. Kieran Trippier’s special delivery from wide areas — ‘One of the best crossers in the Premier League,’ according to Gareth Southgate — was honed at the Manchester City academy under the watchful eye of Jim Cassell and Steve Eyre.

The England captain, rested against Belgium, does not do doubt. He does not do uncertainty or worry. He does not get diverted by things he cannot control. None of that is part of his make-up.

As I stood by the touchline for a television interview after England’s game against Belgium, it was a bonus to see Dele Alli out on the pitch enjoying a good training session.

COLOMBIA SCOUTING REPORT: Colombia's headache concerns the fitness of James Rodriguez, Golden Boot winner at the 2014 World Cup, who came to Russia nursing a calf strain.

ROB DRAPER IN ST PETERSBURG: Dele Alli will put his hand up for a penalty if England face a shoot-out against Colombia — because of the psychological backing England now have.

Kane has vowed to end England’s history of World Cup misery in knockout games and prevail against Colombia on Tuesday night in Moscow as they bid for a victory that has eluded them for 12 years.

With the likes of Germany, Argentina and European champions Portugal already out, former England skipper Wayne Rooney senses an opportunity for Gareth Southgate's side.

James Rodriguez was the only Colombia player who didn't take part in training  on Saturday, raising further doubts about whether he will be fully fit for the World Cup knockout match against England.

Southgate's men enjoy basketball session ahead of Colombia clash

After their session on Saturday, Southgate's lads warmed down from another day at their Repino training base in Saint Petersburg by practicing their skills with a basketball rather than a football. Marcus Rashford, Kieran Trippier and John Stones were among the players to put their multi-sport abilities on show as they shot at a hoop.

England insist they are on full World Cup alert for Colombian duo Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado having already been burned by one Premier League outcast with a point to prove.

Colombia's former Aston Villa midfielder Carlos Sanchez won't be short of motivation when he faces England on Tuesday in Moscow. Sanchez is still angry after seeing red against Japan in Group H.

Arsenal and Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina does not expect his side to freeze in the spotlight when they face England in the last 16 of the World Cup on Tuesday.

Kane's five goals from England's victories over Tunisia and Panama, and the extent to which they struggled in his absence in the defeat by Belgium, has further highlighted the extent of his influence.

Nadal and Federer still top seeds at SW19 10 years after epic final

At four hours and 48 minutes, it is the longest Wimbledon final. Nadal became the first Spaniard since 1966 to win the men's title as he snapped Federer's five-year dominance of the All England Club. 10 years on and, amazingly, when Wimbledon starts, the Swiss will again be No 1 seed and the Spaniard No 2. MATTHEW LAMBERT looks back at the match that defined the careers of two supreme athletes and raised the bar for an entire sport.

Modric is targeting final hurdle as Croatia prepare to take on Denmark

Luka Modric says dark horses Croatia will have achieved nothing if they bow out of the World Cup against Denmark on Sunday. Real Madrid's former Tottenham midfield star is in the form of his life but says his country must not get carried away after taking maximum points from the group stage including a 3-0 demolition of Argentina. Croatia are tipped by many to at least match their 1998 exploits when they reached the semi-finals and Modric said: 'This is an important game for us and I'm very proud of what we've achieved so far. But we need to forget everything that has gone before.'

Denmark captain Simon Kjaer: Schmeichel will be key

Kasper Schmeichel has been backed to keep Denmark's World Cup hopes alive today at the expense of highly-fancied Croatia. The Croatians go into the last 16 tie in Nizhny Vovgorod as one of only two countries to gain maximum points in the group stage but Danish coach Age Hareide's resilient team are in no mood to exit the tournament with their second ever World Cup quarterfinal place at stake. Although the Danes have ridden their luck at times, Schmeichel has been one of their standout players.
