Cheryl and Liam Payne's split is SLAMMED by Piers Morgan as he calls for celebrity couples to be 'more honest'

Cheryl and Liam Payne's relationship split became a source of fury for Piers Morgan, who blasted the couple on Monday's Good Morning Britain.

The broadcaster, 53, ranted about the pair - who called it quits after two years together on Sunday - and criticised celebrity relationships for not being 'honest'.

During his tirade, Piers lambasted the idea that a two-year romance was 'an achievement' and called for stars to be truthful in public splits.

After reading out their near-identical Twitter statements, the presenter appeared confused as to why people were 'sad for them'.

Piers queried: 'Why do we categories more than two years as some sort of achievement. It's not really is it.'

The journalist then refuted the idea that they still had love for one another following the break-up.

Of their statements, Piers ranted: 'If they love each other that much why are they splitting up for. I always think these statements should be more honest. "We can't stand beside each other".'

'In the end if it's two years and you split up it's because you don't like each other anymore.'

Co-host Susanna Reid tried to stem the diatribe, and suggested the couple - who share son Bear, 15 months, together were at 'different stages' in life.

Singer Cheryl, 35, confirmed her split with her former One Direction beau Liam, 24, in a tweet addressed to her 7million Twitter followers on Sunday evening.

The star wrote: 'We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It's been a tough decision for us to make.

'We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.'

Moments later Liam shared the same tweet with his own followers on the micro-blogging site.

It's understood that the One Direction star has already moved out of the lavish £5 million mansion he shared with Cheryl and Bear in leafy Surrey.

According to The Sun, the couple had mutually agreed to separate a fortnight ago following months of speculation regarding the state of their relationship.

A source told the publication: 'Cheryl and Liam worked really hard on their relationship – they had troubles earlier this year and were able to get through them.

'But they’re in different stages of their lives and, after a lot of careful thought, came to a decision that it’s best for everyone if they do go their separate ways.

'He still cares for her and she cares for him. They still have an ongoing relationship together. They have a baby together.'

The announcement comes little more than 24 hours after Cheryl celebrated her 35th birthday, a milestone party Liam failed to attend despite flying back to the United Kingdom earlier that day.

Cheryl and Liam, who welcomed Bear in March 2017, have not been seen together publicly in four months, with February's BRIT Awards the last time fans saw them walking the carpet as a couple.

Prior to their very public show of affection at the BRITs, the couple were plagued by split rumours.
