RFL to probe Salford incident as referee Child appeared to be pelted with object

The Rugby Football League is to probe an incident at the end of Salford’s home defeat by Leeds on Sunday when referee James Child appeared to be pelted with an object.

Child had to duck to avoid what appeared to be a drinks container being hurled at him as he walked down the tunnel at the AJ Bell Stadium at the end of the Betfred Super League match which Leeds won 50-24.

The governing body says it is aware of the incident and will provide an update when it has carried out a review.

“Physical and verbal abuse towards a match official, player, coach or fellow spectator is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the Rugby Football League,” a spokesman said.

“Rugby league grounds are a place where everyone should be able to enjoy watching and participating in our sport and this enjoyment should not be ruined by the actions of a small number of individuals.

“The Rugby Football League is reviewing the incident that took place on Sunday and will provide an update when complete.”

Salford issued a statement following Sunday’s game, apologising to Child and announcing their intention to hand out a life-time ban to the perpetrator.

Red Devils chief executive Ian Blease also outlined plans to introduce a text number facility for supporters to report any anti-social behaviour in future.

In February, Salford were fined £10,000 after their fans ran onto the pitch at the end of the Million-Pound Game at Hull KR last October.

The club had £7,500 of it suspended but a £3,000 fine was imposed from a previous suspended breach following crowd trouble in a match at Huddersfield on Easter Monday.
