Gary Lineker flew home from the World Cup for just one day to accompany his ex-wife to her mother's funeral.

The Match Of The Day host, 57, was in Moscow to present a 10.30pm highlights show after England lost to Belgium on Thursday.

But he made it back to the UK in time to carry the coffin as Daneille Bux's mother Kim Mohammed was laid to rest in Cardiff on Friday, reports The Sun.

He stayed for his ex-mother in law's wake before catching a plane back to Russia ready for the 3pm kickoff of the Argentina v France game on Saturday.

Lineker has remained good friends with model Miss Bux, 39, since the pair divorced in 2016. They had no children.

The BBC presenter has four children with his first wife Michelle Cockayne, who filed for divorce in 2006.

He was pictured arriving and leaving St David's Church in Cardiff with Miss Bux on Friday, before they both attended a gathering at 4th Glamorgan Home Guard Social Club.

There were no games that day, allowing Lineker to make the whirlwind 3,300-mile trip back to Britain.

He flew on Friday morning, but was unable to get a direct flight and had to make a six-hour journey via Paris instead.

But BBC sources told The Sun he remained professional throughout, despite his hectic itinerary and the emotional upheaval.

They told The Sun: 'He was the ultimate pro, ensuring he did not miss airtime.

'Despite the breakneck travel schedule, he knew supporting Danielle was the right thing to do.'

A member of staff at the wake venue told the newspaper Lineker was there for 'at least an hour' before dashing to catch his return flight.

Miss Bux relocated to Los Angeles after she and Lineker divorced. She has a 10-month old daughter with American lawyer Nate Greenwald, 42.

She returned back to the UK when her mother, 57, was taken ill two weeks ago and she died a few days later.

Lineker was revealed as the second highest paid BBC star when the Corporation released wage figures earlier this year.

Only beaten by Radio 2 host Chris Evans, Lineker was estimated to be earning between £1.75million and £1.9million a year.
