Why storing a car for decades won't always earn you a fortune: This Jaguar XJS was stashed away - but here's why the £40K sale price is HALF its value 28 years ago
A Jaguar XJS being sold at auction next month with just 840 miles on the clock has proved that sticking a potential future classic in storage for 28 years can backfire. Despite having barely been used in a conscious effort to safeguard it in the hope that values would spiral as a future classic, the high estimated auction figure is less than half the adjusted original price of £81,014.

Aston menacing: Aston Martin reveals its DBS Superleggera - a £225K revival of a Bond favourite that doesn't require a secret agent to hit 211mph
The new lean and mean £225,000 DBS Superleggera accelerates from rest to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds and takes its inspiration from Aston Martin’s beefy long distance cruising models which over nearly fifty years have been driven on the big screen by British secret agent 007.
Deal or no deal: Mystery shop reveals which car brands are most (and least) likely to knock money off the price of a new motor
The average discount on the list price of vehicles between March and May was £2,581. However, of the 7,500 purchases reviewed, 218 customers couldn't get a single penny off the retail price of a new car. These are the brands providing the most wiggle room and the ones who don't want to haggle on price at all.
Thermal images reveal children are exposed to almost a THIRD more toxic car fumes than their parents while walking to school
Children are exposed to 30 per cent more toxic pollution than their parents when walking to and from school every day, a new study had found. Thermal imaging conducted outside schools showed that children under 11 years inhale almost a third more harmful vehicle fumes because they are in closer proximity to car exhausts.
Birmingham and Leeds reveal plans to charge drivers up to £10 a day to use older cars in city centre Clean Air Zones similar to those in London
Birmingham and Leeds city councils are set to introduce Clean Air Zones in 2020 that will charge drivers between £6 and £10 a day to enter their centres. Similar to the existing T-Charge and next year's Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) in London, the levy will be applied in a bid to tackle lethal 'crisis-level' air pollution.
King of the 80s classics: Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth tipped to sell for £105,000 as Britain's frenzy for collectible fast Fords continues
The 1987 model - number 38 out of 500 built - is the second souped-up Sierra expected to break the £100,000 mark in as little as two months after another sold for £112,500 in May. The car has an incredibly low 10,840 miles on the clock and has been kept in the same family since 1988. It's now being offered by the original owner's wife - who the car is registered to after his death - who wants to use the funds to purchase a retirement bungalow.
Parking on pavements to become illegal across Scotland as part of new Transport Bill that could include Low Emission Zones similar to London
The Scottish Government said any owner who leaves a car straddling the kerb will be issued with a fine from the local authority. Under current law, parking on the pavement is only illegal in London - except areas of the capital where drives are instructed to do so. The new measures also proposed low emission zones similar to those being introduced in London from next year.
London's ultra-low emission zone to extend to North and South Circular - 18 TIMES LARGER than originally proposed - slapping £12.50 charges on motorists with no discount for residents
Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed that the ultra-low emission zone introduced next year will be expanded to the North and South Circular roads from October 2021. It means those driving older vehicles across a major part London – an area 18 times greater than the central zone – will face extra daily fees of £12.50 if they use their cars.
Family cars you can count on: The most reliable best-selling hatchbacks on the market revealed
We Britons love hatchbacks. While saloons are very much the preferred choice in other countries, the UK's best-sellers are traditionally five-door models. Nine out of the ten most-registered cars of last year were models with boot doors. But which of the popular hatches are most reliable? Warranty Direct claims to have the answers, including, clockwise from top right, the Mercedes A Class, Ford Fiesta, Mini, VW Golf, Audi A3 and Vauxhall Astra.
'I'm £4,000 a year better off with my Tesla': From going electric, to comparing petrol prices and better driving - how to save at least £6 every time you fill up
Thom Monk, pictured, believes he now saves £4,000 a year on fuel bills thanks to trading in his old gas-guzzler for an electric vehicle three years ago. There's one major caveat, however, his Tesla Model S cost him £65,000. Many people may not be able to stretch to that but with the average cost of filling a family car up to £71, here's what you can do.
The first learner driver takes to the motorway as law change allows provisional licence holders to use Britain's fastest-moving roads from June
EXCLUSIVE: Finbar King, 17, has become the first learner to legally drive on a British motorway by entered the M25 during a driving lesson with an instructor on Monday at 00:01, which is the exact time the law changed to allow provisional licence holders to motor along the nation's fastest-moving routes.
The four gadgets you need to protect your car: Motorists are flocking to buy these to guard against a new wave of thefts and scams
With motorists increasingly vulnerable to a wave of next-generation car crime, retailers say more drivers are protecting themselves with the latest security devices - and some more old school ones. A spate of high-value vehicle thefts and a rise in the number of cash-for-crash insurance scams has seen the sale of four products in particular sky-rocket in the last couple of years. They are, clockwise from top left: a key signal blocker, dashcam, vehicle tracking system, and steering lock.
When you don't want to be seen in the same Ferrari as anyone else: The glorious one-off SP38 created for one of 'its most dedicated customers'
The Ferrari SP38 has been created for 'one of Ferrari's most dedicated customer' and features styling cues from famous prancing horses, including the F40 and 308 GTB. Another will never be made, as part of the famed Italian supercar-maker's unique 'One-Off' programme, which is a money-spinner that also harks back to its history of coachbuilt cars.
How driving could get safer: Europe wants ALL new cars to be fitted with these eleven safety measures by 2021
All new cars will be packed with significantly more life-saving safety equipment than ever before within three years - if Europe's lawmakers get their own way. These include autonomous emergency braking (top left) fatigue monitoring systems (top right), reversing cameras (bottom left) and lane-keep assist (bottom right), all of which could save an estimated 7,300 lives in Europe between 2020 and 2030.
Back from the dead: Up to 117,000 potentially lethal classic cars could be back on the road as all vehicles older than 40 years will be MOT exempt under new rules
Any car built before 1978 is MOT exempt under the Department for Transport's new rules. Up to now, only cars manufactured before 1960 have avoided the annual check-up. Of the 250,000 cars registered between 1960 and 1978 currently registered in the UK, almost half are declared SORN and don't have an up-to-date MOT certificate. This includes models like the VW Beetle (top left), Ford Escort (bottom left), Mini (top right) and MBG (bottom right).

The Dreamliner, which can weigh up to 560,000lbs with fuel, is more than triple the Model X's recommended tow limit of about 5,500 lbs, according to Australian airline Qantas, which supplied the Dreamliner.

The iconic British marque says its £250,000 purpose-built sports utility vehicle is inspired by Lawrence of Arabia's military-readied Roller, though it has undoubtedly been designed with the super-rich in mind. Here's everything you need to know about the Cullinan.

Bargain barges with bulletproof reliability: The best (and worst) used luxury cars that won't ravage your savings with recurring repair bills
Luxury cars tend to depreciate rapidly, so many appear on the used market with bargain price tags. But these models are fitted with lots of tech that can go wrong. Ten iconic British cars that WON'T need an MOT in 2018, as the test is axed for any vehicle over 40 years old
Own a classic British car and panic each time you book it in for an MOT in fear it could cost you a small fortune in repairs? New rules confirmed by the Department for Transport last week say any car over 40 years old will not have to endure a roadworthiness examination. That means any car built before 1978 will be MOT exempt from May 2018. Here are 10 iconic British cars that fall into the 18-year window created by the rule change.
