KEY EVENTS IN GEORGE'S FIRST YEAR

Here are the events leading up to Prince George's first birthday.

:: July 22, 2013 - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first child - a boy - is born at the private Lindo wing of St Mary's Hospital in London at 4.24pm, weighing 8lbs 6oz.

:: July 23, 2013 - Proud grandparents Carole and Michael Middleton, followed by the Prince of Wales, visit their new grandchild. The baby Prince - a future king - makes his public debut in front of the world's media on the hospital steps, wrapped in a white merino wool shawl, cradled in his proud parents' arms, before being driven home to Kensington Palace by William.

:: July 24, 2013 - The Queen meets her new great-grandson for the first time. Kensington Palace announce the baby's name - Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge. The new family-of-three head to the Middleton family home near Bucklebury, Berkshire, where they spend the first few weeks of George's life.

:: August 19, 2013 - In an interview with CNN, William admits that George is a "little bit of a rascal", adding "he's doing very well at the moment".

:: August 20, 2013 - The first official photos, taken by Michael Middleton, are released, showing George sleeping soundly in his mother's arms as the Cambridges sit in the garden of the Middleton family home.

:: August 30, 2013 - Kate, on her first official engagement since George's birth, tells well-wishers at a marathon event on Anglesey how she is enjoying every minute of being a mum, how quickly the Prince is changing and how he is getting quite huge. George stays at home with his granny Carole.

:: September 12, 2013 - William and Kate spend their first evening away from George when they attend the inaugural black tie Tusk Trust awards. William jokes that George has a ''voice to match any lion's roar''.

:: September 14, 2013 - George heads to Balmoral with his parents and meets his great-grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh for the first time. Prince Philip had spent two months convalescing after abdominal surgery.

:: October 23, 2013 - Prince George is christened in the Chapel Royal in front of his close family and godparents who include Zara Phillips. It is only the second time George has been seen in public since his birth. He blows bubbles while being gently bounced by his father before the ceremony.

:: December 19, 2013 - Kensington Palace announce that William and Kate will tour New Zealand and Australia in April 2014 and that George is likely to join them for his first official overseas tour, echoing William's trip Down Under when he was a baby.

:: December 25, 2013 - George spends his first Christmas with the royal family at Sandringham, but does not attend the traditional Christmas Day church service.

:: February 3, 2014 - Hello! magazine publishes pictures of Kate and George heading on holiday to the Caribbean island of Mustique - the Prince's first foreign trip. William remains in the UK to continue with his agricultural studies at Cambridge University.

:: February 9, 2014 - The Duke, along with his father the Prince of Wales, records a video message calling for action to save endangered animals, saying he has become even more devoted to protecting the earth's resources for his son George. But William faces criticism for launching the campaign a day after enjoying a hunting trip in Spain with Prince Harry.

:: March 2, 2014 - Kensington Palace confirm George, plus a nanny, will head to New Zealand and Australia on his parents' royal tour. During the three week trip, he is expected to attend his first ever public engagement .

:: March 7, 2014 - William and Kate fly off for a week-long holiday to the Maldives leaving seven-and-a-half-month-old George behind with his grandparents and nanny.

:: March 20, 2014 - Kensington Palace announce that George's new full time live-in nanny is Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, who is originally from Spain and who trained at the prestigious Norland College.

:: March 30, 2014 - William and Kate release an official family photo on mother's day showing them with a chubby-cheeked George and and their pet dog Lupo at the window of their Kensington Palace apartment.

:: April 7, 2014 - The family arrives in Wellington at the start of their three week tour of New Zealand and Australia. Kate carries her son down the steps of the plane where George's first ever official duty is to be welcomed by New Zealand's prime minister John Key.

:: April 9, 2014 - George attends a playgroup in Wellington's Government House, going on a crawl-about with other babies and even stealing some of their toys. He wears £75 blue dungaree shorts by British luxury brand Rachel Riley, a white blouse and soft blue pre-walking shoes.

:: April 13, 2014 - Rumours start that George might soon have a brother or sister when William tells a well-wisher who presents him with a lace shawl: "You might have to make another one soon." But Kate quashes the speculation after she drinks wine at a vineyard and takes a white knuckle jet boat ride.

:: April 20, 2014 - George visits Sydney's Taronga zoo and meets a bilby - a rabbit-like marsupial - named after him. William and Kate tell well-wishers during their tour of Australian that their son is teething and drooling heavily.

:: April 22, 2014 - The Prince has grown during the trip, adding an ''extra fat roll'', the Duchess reveals. George stays with his nanny in Canberra as William and Kate spend the night away on a visit to Uluru.

:: April 25, 2014 - George, dressed in a red cardigan, bids farewell to Australia and flies home to the UK with his parents.

:: May 10, 2014 - The Duke says he hopes his son will experience "the wonders" of snorkelling and scuba diving as William becomes president of the activity's governing body the British Sub-Aqua Club.

:: May 20, 2014 - Mike Tindall reveals George's first meeting with his second cousin Mia was "carnage" with most of George's food going on the table rather than in his mouth.

:: May 29, 2014 - William and Kate pick up a kilt for George at Glenturret whisky distillery near Crieff in Perthshire.

:: May 31, 2014 - William says he will have a kick about with George as he sends a good luck message to England football squad ahead of the World Cup.

:: June 14, 2014 - The royals gather on the Palace balcony for the traditional flypast after Trooping the Colour, but there is no sign of baby George.

:: June 15, 2014 - George is photographed on Father's Day walking with the help of his mother and playing with a football while watching William play in a Cirencester polo match.

:: June 16, 2014 - Royal Mint unveils a commemorative £5 coin to mark George's first birthday as he becomes the first member of the royal family to be honoured in this way.

:: June 28, 2014 - George's uncle Prince Harry describes the Prince as having big, chubby cheeks and looking like "a young Winston Churchill". He also says his nephew is walking.

:: July 9, 2014 - William describes George's bath time as a "painful" experience as he officially takes over the presidency of the British Sub-Aqua Club. "I imagine as he gets a little bit older, donning a mask and snorkel might calm him down," he adds.
