A new exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service titled ‘Patios, Pools and the Invention of the American Backyard’ is shedding new light on how some Americans came to claim the backyard as their haven from life and a private domain. Kate Fox, one of the curators of the new exhibit, explained to DailyMail.com that the ‘collection is primarily photographs but also has landscape drawings’ showcasing the American garden. ‘The exhibit focuses on this narrow period in time from the end of World War II to the end of the 1960s when the backyard became something that was more widely available to everyone.’ Americans began flocking to newly built suburban neighborhoods from cities that were becoming too congested and those suburban developments included backyard spaces that offered privacy to homeowners.

Thai officials are preparing to decide which of the boys trapped in a flooded cave will swim for their lives - and which will stay behind.   Chiang Rai provincial governor Narongsak Osatanakorn, who is overseeing the rescue of the youth football team and their coach, has said that 'all 13 may not come out at the same time.' He said authorities will evaluate their readiness each day and if there is any risk will not proceed. Earlier, the boys, aged 11 to 16, said they are healthy in a newly released video (right). The 12 boys and their coach are seen sitting with Thai Navy Seals in the dark cave with their visibly skinny faces illuminated by the beam of a flashlight. The boys and their 25-year-old coach disappeared after they went exploring in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in northern Chiang Rai province after a football game on June 23.

Producer, director and star Nick Loeb tells The Hollywood Reporter that he has lost actors, filming locations and most recently the on-set electrician after they learned about the production. Loeb, who fought ex Sofia Vergara when the actress revealed her plan to destroy the couple's frozen embryos, claims just last week he had an incident when a woman came up demanding to speak with the director. 'When I told her I was, she told me to go f*** myself,' said Loeb, who has been filming under the working title of 1973. 'Then she threw her headset on the ground and walked off. I found out later she was our electrician.'

Demonstrators taking to the streets to protest at President Trump's immigration policy were met with brutal resistance from officers as they attempted to block the garage doors outside the city's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) center. Horrifying photos emerging from the protests show police officers hauling those who resisted away and forcing them into handcuffs as tensions reached fever pitch among the gathered crowd. While footage posted on social media also showed a team of officers wrestling a struggling protester to the floor as they attempted to put him in cuffs.

Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz (left) has claimed that his friends on Martha's Vineyard are shunning him for defending Trump, and that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (top right) and Bernie Sanders (bottom right) 'don't represent the Democratic party'. 'I won't let the Democrats steal my party from me. I want to regain the center,' Dershowitz told WABC Radio's Curtis and Cosby show. Dershowitz criticized Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders, saying that he wants to 'make sure that the radical left, the woman who got elected in the Bronx and Queens to Congress on the Democratic ticket, that they and Sanders and others don't represent the Democratic Party'.

Diego Suero is allegedly the gangster who ordered the brutal machete 'hit' on Lesandro 'Junior' Guzman-Feliz on June 20. The fatal attack on Guzman-Feliz, which was caught on surveillance footage, later turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. On Tuesday, Suero was marched out of the 48th precinct in the Bronx to face charges of murder, manslaughter, gang assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Suero was also charged with conspiracy. Ten members of the notorious Dominican gang, Trinitarios, have been arrested over the murder of Guzman-Feliz.

Defending champion Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut chomped down a record 74 franks and buns to take home his 11th title at the annual Nathan's Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest while Miki Sudo consumed 37 franks to win her fifth straight title in Coney Island on Wednesday. Chestnut, the renowned competitive eater from San Jose, California, takes home the coveted Mustard Belt and surpassed the previous mark of 72 dogs and buns he downed last year. The heat wasn't a factor; the National Weather Service put the temperature at 83 degrees with a heat index of 91 degrees. Sudo, a native of Las Vegas, fell short of the 41 hot dogs she consumed last year but still beat out second-place finisher Michelle Lesco, of Tucson, Arizona. Lesco chowed down 28 wieners and buns.

President Donald Trump's controversial tactics at the southern border have managed to draw the ire of a powerful neighbor to the north - the Kennedys. Ethel Kennedy and her brood have been vocal about their disdain for the Trump administration's zero tolerance policy for weeks now, with Ethel herself even announcing that she would be fasting in protest. And on the eve of Fourth of July the family launched a more direct attack on the administration - and First Lady Melania Trump in particular - by breaking out some paint and and green jackets, on which they each wrote: 'I Really Do Care.' Ethel and friends of the family then wore the jackets as the family continued their annual tradition of golf carting through the annual Hyannisport Fourth of July parade.

President Donald Trump is spending the afternoon at Trump National Golf Club. The president's activities at the Virginia property are unknown, but photographers captured him leaving the White House on Wednesday wearing a white ball cap and a white polo -- attire that typically denotes a golf trip. Prior to leaving the White House, President Trump sent a low-key Independence Day tweet that said: 'Happy Fourth of July....Our Country is doing GREAT!' He also shared a video himself delivering the weekly presidential address, which he used this week as a tribute to the armed services. 'We are in awe of their courage, and we are eternally in their debt. Together we honor their noble sacrifice by pledging our love and loyalty to our country,' he said. Donald and Melania Trump will this evening host a picnic and concert from the White House lawn for military families featuring two failed ' American Idol ' contestants and a country music that will be broadcast for the first time on the Hallmark Channel.

More than 30 babies at the Advocate Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Downers Grove, Illinois, were given patriotic makeovers. In addition to wearing sweet red, white, and blue outfits, many of the babies were also pictured lying alongside July 4th decorations, or holding flags. The NICU itself was also decorated for the early celebration, which took place two days before Independence Day.

Nining Sunarsih, 53, vanished in January last year after being swept into the ocean in Indonesia while bathing, only to be found on the same beach on Saturday, her family claims. Her relatives say they returned to look for her after her father had repeated dreams that she was waiting to be picked up. After searching for several hours, they claim to have found her shortly after midnight lying around 1,600ft from where she went missing. She has since regained consciousness and has been able to eat and drink, but cannot speak and so has been unable to explain what happened to her.

The video footage shows the unnamed woman ranting at fellow passengers on a bus in Orangeburg, Rockland County, New York, using vile racial slurs - including the n-word. Witnesses say she began verbally attacking others on the bus for no apparent reason, and became violent when she discovered she was being filmed. She reportedly began her attack by targeting the bus driver, before moving on to tell some passengers whom she perceived as immigrants to 'go back to your own f***ing country', and ask them if they 'had their papers'.

A grieving mother had her car broken into and late baby daughter's favorite toy taken - a memento she carried everywhere to remind her of her first child. Somer Pickel, from Johnson City in Memphis, wrote a heartbreaking note to the thieves begging for the return of the pink rattle her daughter had learned to use just months before her death last year. Ms Pickel, who works as a nurse, lost her daughter Avelyn to a congenital heart defect in June 2017, when the baby was about 18 months old. She begged followers for help finding her dark green bag with the rattle attached to the outside, explaining: 'I don’t care about the bag or the contents, just the rattle'.

Rosey Blair asked the woman to swap seats so that she could sit with her boyfriend (together left) on the flight to Dallas. Rosey turned to her boyfriend after and said: 'I hope she meets the love of her life'. So they were both happily surprised when former pro soccer player Euan Holden (inset and right with the woman) sat next to her. Rosey gave live updates as the pair talked and flirted for the entire flight, revealing they shared a cheese board and posting pictures of their elbows touching. She also captured a photo of them walking closely together at the airport.

The Palin women headed to their home in Scottsdale, Arizona, for the bride-to-be's 'last fling before the ring' bash and bridal shower, which kicked off on Tuesday. Willow's sisters Bristol, 27, and Piper, 17, organized the bachelorette with the help of party planner Tiffany Weaver-Walkdrip, giving their sister a 'Bride' swimsuit - which she put on immediately - and some saucy penis-shaped accessories (left). Willow and Bristol both shared photos and videos from the lavish party, which included a mimosa bar and a wall of doughnuts. The two daughters of King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain will spend this month in America at a summer camp with other children, a statement issued by the Spanish palace read. Princess Leonor, 12, and Infanta Sofia, 11, will return to Spain in time for their annual summer trip to Mallorca. A girl enjoying the waters off popular Myrtle beach in South Carolina was bitten in an apparent shark attack on Monday. In June, in the same area, a shark was captured on camera very close to shore. The unidentified girl was with her family, when they all started screaming for help after her leg was bitten.    Cristy Torres, who was at the beach, filmed the girl being treated and explained the frightening scene to ABC News.    

Doria, who has maintained a dignified silence since long before the royal wedding, was casual for the outing in a pair of patterned trousers and an orange top. She kept her head down as she strolled back to her vehicle after making her stop at Shabazz Bean Pies in downtown Inglewood. Meanwhile, across the pond, her ex-husband Thomas and his family - who have done nothing but embarrass Meghan since her engagement to Prince Harry - were torn to shreds. Nicky Haslam, 78, described them as 'frightfully common' and said it was a blessing in disguise that none made it May's wedding.

Etiquette expert William Hanson has explained the reason Meghan Markle and Prince Harry appear to have stopped holding hands at official engagements, is to appear more professional since getting married. A 16-year-old driver in Minnesota drove straight into an enormous sinkhole Tuesday thinking it was a branch in the road, less than a month after he got his car. Heavy rains have been pounding southwestern Minnesota, causing massive road damage. Under the heavy rains, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office says the sinkhole was formed after a culvert beneath the township road was washed out. Jaxson Lang told WCCO CBS that he had just gotten the car, but was thankfully wearing his seat-belt and his airbag deployed. 

LeBron James is still out enjoying the sunny weather in Italy with his family. The NBA superstar was photographed on a luxury yacht in Positano on Wednesday, days after he agreed to a $154million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. 'King James' was snapped in the dining hall and walking along the deck of the yacht as it set sail in Positano, a village on the Amalfi Coast. James, 33, was a dressed very casually Wednesday afternoon sporting a white tank top, blue shorts, shades and a colorful fitted hat. At one point James seemed to point at the camera as he walked along the yacht. The former Cleveland Cavaliers player jetted out to Positano with his wife and three kids on Monday, hours after he met with Magic Johnson to sign a four-year $154million contact to join the Lakers.

A California family wants answers after a father-of-two drowned in a freak accident when he was sucked under water by a large irrigation pipe used for crops. Carlos Tovar was untangling a ski line in the Delta in San Joaquin County last week when he was sucked under, police said. His friends tried desperately to untangle him and pull him back on board, but could not free him. Authorities said it appears that Tovar was held under water by a large pipe that juts out of the levee into the water. Investigators said the irrigation pipes are used to pump water to crops.

The parents of a missing Hawaii-based US Navy sailor received a text from his phone two days after he disappeared. Shaun Palmer failed to report for duty on Sunday, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service say his parents received a text from his phone on Tuesday. It said: 'I'm alive and I love you'. The 24-year-old was reportedly last seen outside Kelly O'Neill's bar in Waikiki following a fight. The Iowa man is a hospital corpsman assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Rev. Michael Briese had been due to officiate the funeral of Ms Agnes Hicks at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte Hall, but before the ceremony could begin, a guest knocked over a chalice, damaging it. This angered Rev Briese, who proceeded to order all the mourners out, telling pallbearers to 'get this thing out of my church'. The Archdiocese of Washington announced Tuesday that the Rev. Michael Briese is on leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Yoriko Hamachiyo, from the Japanese island of Honshu, owns pet salon Yorikokoro, and documents the incredible haircuts she gives her furry friends on Instagram where she now boasts more than 20,000 followers. The pooches are often left unrecognisable following their make-overs, with Yorkikokoro often giving them the addition of bow ties, ribbons and little blouses to complete the look. A mother who's so dedicated to extended breastfeeding her nearly two-year-old son Archer that she even feeds him while sitting on the toilet says she's going to continue nursing for as long as she can. Writer Becky Vieira, 42, from San Francisco, updates her followers on Instagram on life as a breastfeeding mother and says most of the reaction she receives is positive. Elaine Welteroth served as editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue until the magazine closed its print issue in December of 2017. On Monday, she took an Uber to an unfamiliar neighborhood in Brooklyn, where the driver dropped her off at the wrong intersection. When she pointed out that it wasn't the correct address, he said it wasn't his job to get her to the exact location and ordered her out. After she refused, he called 911 and she began recording. She tried to follow him out of the car to record, and he slammed the door on her arm, leaving cuts and bruises. He then told the 911 operator that she was hitting him, despite the recording proving otherwise. She was unable to report him through the app, since she'd been kicked off when he reported her. But her story caught the attention of Arianna Huffington, who is on the board at Uber and promised to investigate.

Maxamillian Neubauer of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, was the first to 'breastfeed' his newborn daughter, Rosalía, while his wife, April, was recovering an emergency C-section. A nurse at Door County Medical Center created a supplemental nursing system for the dad using a nipple shield, a feeding tube, and a formula-filled syringe. The heartwarming photos of Maxamillian 'breastfeeding' his newborn daughter have been shared more than 30,000 times on Facebook.

Patrick Martin, 50, was travelling around the coast of British Columbia, Canada, when he came across a sleuth of bears fighting one another. However, two of the beasts appeared to pause from their fight to share a touching bear hug, leading Patrick to quickly snap the unique moment. Patrick, from Washington DC, said: 'I felt very privileged to get to see these animals in their habitat acting out their natural behaviour.'

The video shows the violent altercation which is believed to have taken place in a car park in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny in central Russia's Republic of Tatarstan. A friend of the unidentified mother sitting in the passenger seat films the raging dad standing in front of the vehicle to stop it from driving away. As the footage begins the man can be seen at the front of the car banging his fist violently against the windscreen. Speaking in Russian, the mother repeatedly screams at her ex: 'Go away!' to which he replies, 'I will not go, open the door!'

A little boy was spotted crying for help after getting his neck trapped between anti-theft grille bars in China. The three-year-old had his body dangling on a first-floor balcony, at about 10 feet high, while neighbours tried to break into the apartment to save him. Other members of public were also seen stretching their arms in a bid to catch the boy.

Dramatic footage shows Alex Nomernoy sprinting along the roof of the Sapsan - or Peregrine Falcon - express as it powers along the tracks in the Russian capital Moscow. At one point, the 20-year-old can be seen wedging himself between two of the carriages as a locomotive roars past just inches away on another line. Nomernoy, from Sevastopol City, also creeps past powerful conductors on top of the train, which is capable of speeds of up to 155mph. He later revealed that the stunt was part of a protest over the price of tickets, arguing that it 'doesn't match the comfort of the train'.
