EXCLUSIVE: 'I was feeling really down for a bit': Former That '70s Show star Wilmer Valderrama, 38, reveals a difficult period in his life inspired him to take better care of his health

He may have spent two decades in showbusiness but Wilmer Valderrama, 38, could easily be mistaken an actor 10 years his junior.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia at the Logie Awards on Sunday, the NCIS star revealed that a difficult period in his life motivated him to take better care of himself.

Wilmer explained there was a time just before he turned 30 when he was 'struggling' and this ended up being a catalyst for getting his health in order.

'I was feeling really down for a bit there so I really had to work on that,' Wilmer confessed, describing the period in his life as 'tough'.

The American actor made a conscious effort to look after himself, both mentally and physically, around this time.

'I think I just really nipped it in the bud early, I started really trying to take care of myself in my late twenties and made sure I was getting enough rest - because I was working crazy hours with That 70s Show.'

While Wilmer admitted there were a number of factors behind his youthful looks, it mainly came down to eating better and trying to squeeze in plenty of sleep.

'It was really just nutrition, getting lots of exercise and making sure I got some rest - especially with working so hard and long hours on sets all day,' he explained.

Hinting that he has experienced ups and downs in his own life, Wilmer added that he hopes more men will speak openly about their feelings.

'I feel like some men struggle to talk about their feelings and it is an issue,' he said.

'That's something we've got to work towards as a society and why I work so hard as a social activist.'

Wilmer also discussed the #MeToo movement that's sweeping Hollywood and beyond, as more and more women speak out against sexual abuse and harassment.

'We're at a point where it's a great thing that's so empowering for women who are able to speak up and tell the world what has happened to them,' he said

'It is brave and it's something that I'm glad they now have the ability to do and that things are changing.'

Wilmer has been Down Under on a whirlwind promotional trail which culminated in his appearance at the Logies on the Gold Coast on Sunday.

He said he quickly became fond of the Australian people, describing them as 'really happy', 'ready to celebrate' and 'beautiful'.

But like many Americans, there is one Aussie culinary tradition that it took a while for him to get his head around - Vegemite.

'I tasted it and was like "Oh my god what is in my mouth?" but I like it now. It's an acquired taste but it's really something I've grown to love,' he said.
