Donald Trump has been 'banned' from the city of Sheffield by its new mayor - just ten days ahead of the US president's visit to the UK.

Magid Magid labelled Trump a 'wasteman' and said there was no space for him to visit the city.

Instead, the day of Trump's arrival on July 13 should be celebrated as Mexico Solidarity Day, Mr Magid said, as he wore a 'Trump is a Wasteman' t-shirt, teamed with green Doctor Martin boots.

Green Party councillor Magid Magid made the announcement on Twitter, citing Mr Trump's 'Muslim ban', the detention of children at the border, and withdrawing the US from the Paris Climate Agreement as reasons.

Afterwards he tweeted: 'Magid Magid, Lord Mayor & first citizen of this city hereby declare that not only is Donald J Trump a WASTEMAN, but he is also henceforth banned from the great city of Sheffield!

'I further declare July 13th to be Mexico Solidarity Day!'

The mayor, 28, made waves when he became the youngest person to be elected to the role for his four-year term lasting until 2020.

He may be unconventional, with his inauguration images being of him squatting on a stair column, looking more cool than council, but he is certainly popular.

The ex refugee came to the UK aged five from Burao in northern Somalia (now in Somaliland).

After school he took a year out travelling around the world, then went to the University of Hull where he studied Aquatic Zoology.

Later, he worked for Shelter and was self-employed, as well as opening a digital marketing business.

He also founded and led the University of Hull's MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Club where he was given his fight name 'Magic Magid the Submission Magician'.

He has appeared on Channel 4's show The Hunted and knows how to use social media to reach out to his target audience.

It is no surprise then, he has become a hit in Sheffield. Just hours before declaring Trump's ban the mayor promised a huge party in his city if England win the World Cup.

However, as Mayor, Magid has no powers to ban the president - or anyone - from Sheffield.

The Mayor, according to the council in Sheffield is an 'ambassador for the area; promoting it as a place to live, work, visit and invest in'.

A description of duties says: 'The Mayor has certain public transport powers relating to how buses may operate in the future.

'Further powers and resources may be devolved to the Mayor and the Mayoral Combined Authority if agreement can be reached in the future. This could include the powers from the 2015 Devolution Deal with Government, such as the £900m of funding to grow the economy and powers for adult skills and training. Both the Mayoral Combined Authority and the Mayor would need to agree to any such additional powers being devolved.'

The former president of Hull University student union urged his followers to join anti-Trump demonstrations, give money to anti-Trump organisations and lobby political leaders to oppose Trump.

Protests in London on Thursday and Friday will include 'a 12 hour rave organised by world-renowned DJs', campaign group Stand Up To Trump said.

Mr Trump cancelled another proposed visit to the UK earlier this year.
