Ian Gomez responds to Nia Vardalos' divorce filing... as duo split following 25 years of marriage

Nia Vardalos filed for divorce on Tuesday from Ian Gomez after 25 years of marriage.

And just two days later, Ian has responded to the divorce filing - also citing irreconcilable differences as well, according to People.

The actor, 53, also asked for joint legal and physical custody of their 11-year-old daughter Ilaria Vardalos Gomez.

The Cougar Town actor requested that spousal support 'be determined in mediation,' in his filing, which he did on Thursday in Los Angeles, the website reports.

Soon after their split, Nia and Ian released a joint statement: 'We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time. Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable,' via Just Jared

'It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy.'

Their date of separation was listed as June 29, 2017, according to TMZ.

Nia, 55, became a household name after she wrote and starred in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Their marriage was a point of inspiration for the hit 2002 movie; the film was based on her real-life experience as a Canadian of Greek descent looking for love.

She played Fotoula 'Toula' Portokalos-Miller with her love interest Ian Miller, played by John Corbett; Michael Constantine, Lainie Kazan and Joey Fatone also starred. 

It became one of the highest grosses independent films of all time.

In addition to starring alongside Courteney Cox on the show Cougar Town from 2009 until 2015, Ian has also been on The Drew Carey Show.

He also played in Nia's My Big Greek Wedding film as the best man for John Corbett's character - a character named Mike.

In March 2016, Nia co-wrote and starred in the sequel - My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2; Ian reprised his role as well.

Ian and Nia co-hosted the ABC reality show The Great American Baking Show for two years; from 2015 until 2017.

The former lovebirds tied the knot in 1993; they adopted Ilaria in 2008.

Nia and Ilaria were spotted on Wednesday in Greece, just one day after Nia filed for divorce.
