England stars warm down after World Cup quarter-final win over Sweden

England's World Cup heroes were unwinding back in Repino on Sunday the day after securing their spot in the semi-final after beating Sweden. Headers from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli either side of half-time secured a 2-0 win in Samara and a clash with Croatia in Moscow. Harry Kane and Co were put through a light warm down session back at their training base as the preparations for the game at the Luzhniki Stadium begin in earnest.

Gareth Southgate's England team can reach for the stars

MAIL ON SUNDAY CHIEF SPORTS WRITER IN SAMARA: So now we are here, in this place where we never dreamed we would be, do we look up or do we look down? Do we gaze up to the stars like the cosmonauts whose faces adorn the sides of the shabby tower blocks that line the dual carriageway running between the centre of this city and the arena where England reached their first World Cup semi-final for 28 years. Do we give thanks for what this unheralded group of young men are doing in this tournament and accept that this is as good as it is going to get this time? Do we remind ourselves that we have measured out our lives in England disappointments at tournaments and that we had given up on ever seeing the likes of this again?

ROB DRAPER IN SAMARA: Make no mistake. In the Samara Arena, situated on the banks of the River Volga in a far-flung corner of Russia, an England team made history.

Having pulled a last gasp lap to snatch pole position in qualifying, Lewis Hamilton will now target a British Grand Prix record of five straight wins. Follow all the action here.

Cormier, who became the first man since Conor McGregor to hold two UFC titles at the same time with the win, called for a showdown with Brock Lesnar in his post-fight interview.

Let the celebrations begin! England stars jump into stands with their nearest and dearest... as Lingard embraces his mum after flying her to Russia for quarter-final

It was another memorable victory for England as they beat Sweden 2-0 to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 28 years.  The England players received plenty of support at the Samara Stadium, not least from their families, and several members of Gareth Southgate's squad entered the stands after the game to spend time with their loved ones.  Among them was Harry Maguire, with the Leicester defender having opened the scoring for England before Dele Alli made it 2-0.

England legends Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker plot 'long night' of celebrations after

England legends Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have joined the rest of the country in making the most of the Three Lions' incredible World Cup run, which has resulted in a semi-final spot. Shearer uploaded a video online which showed him and fellow pundits in a bar or restaurant, singing along to iconic Three Lions anthem. Shearer is seen using breadsticks as a makeshift microphone and being egged on by Jurgen Klinsmann and Lineker. He then starts singing 'All Night Long' by Lionel Richie. In the video, Shearer said: 'Three words, it's coming home' 'A little bit of a party going on,' the former striker added, before turning the camera to face Lineker and Ferdinand as the chorus of the anthem kicked in.

The choirmaster! Southgate conducts the tune of delighted England fans in Samara after booking place in World Cup semi-final

England in a World Cup semi-final, who would have thought it some will say? But this has not happened by accident. Gareth Southgate has been meticulously preparing his players for such an occasion ever since he was first anointed as the chosen one to carry England forward on a permanent basis almost two years ago. And after England had just broke through and dismantled - with assurance - what was supposed to be an impregnable Swedish wall, the likeable Southgate blossomed like a flower to give a glimpse of how he first drilled into his players what playing for your country represents.

IAN HERBERT IN SAMARA: The perimeter advertising here promoted FIFA’s ‘Best Football Awards and Raheem Sterling was the one who put in the kind of performance to befit that.

OLIVER HOLT IN SAMARA: Southgate's victory this summer extends beyond the glinting silver dome of the Samara Arena where his young England side left Sweden in their wake.

It wasn’t stifling humidity in Samara because of the evening kick-off Russian time, but it was still hot. As it turned out, that was more of a problem for Sweden than England.

CHESTER 0-7 LIVERPOOL - DOMINIC KING IN CHESTER: Naby Keita and Fabinho, the midfielders who have cost almost £100million, launched their Liverpool careers on Saturday afternoon but it was a homegrown youngster who caught the eye. Harry Wilson, who spent much of last season on loan at Hull City, scored two goals in a lively 45-minute appearance and gave the impression he will give Jurgen Klopp plenty to think about during pre-season, as he looks to take the next step in his career. Liverpool won 7-0 at the Swansway Chester Stadium in a canter.

Come in No 7? Juventus social media in China teases imminent Cristiano Ronaldo arrival

Juventus have appeared to tease the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid with a post on their official Weibo account in China. The post, which was quickly deleted, ran through a list of players to wear the number seven shirt for Juventus, including Angelo Di Livio, Gianluca Pessotto, Hasan Salihamidzic, Simone Pepe, Simone Zaza and Juan Cuadrado. Ronaldo, who is synonymous with the number seven, has been heavily linked with a move to the Serie A champions.

SAMI MOKBEL AT THE SAMARA ARENA: Goals by Harry Maguire and Dele Alli capped off a relatively comfortable afternoon for England and they now await either Croatia or host Russia in the last four.

Gareth Southgate's men produced an assured and dominant performance to dump Sweden out of the tournament, but Kane, is determined not to get carried away.

Songs on the bus and a rowdy midnight meal... how Croatia celebrated beating Russia (let's hope the party went on and on)

'Seleciao!' Italian and Spanish papers react to Brazil's World Cup exit

Brazil's elimination from the World Cup at the hands of Belgium sent shockwaves through football as the tournament became an exclusively European affair. A Fernandinho own goal and a stunning arrow-straight strike from Kevin de Bruyne sent Brazil, one of the pre-tournament favourites, packing despite Renato Augusto's late response. With France set to play Belgium in one semi-final and four European sides - England, Sweden, Russia and Croatia - set to contest the quarter-finals on the opposite side of the draw, we will have a fourth successive winner from the continent.

Ruthless Neville scolds Muslera and slams 'embarrassing' Gimenez

Gary Neville was in particularly ruthless mood during Uruguay's World Cup quarter-final defeat by France as he led the criticism of goalkeeper Fernando Muslera's costly blunder and slammed Jose Gimenez for crying before the full-time whistle. Les Bleus led 1-0 in Nizhny Novgorod courtesy of Raphael Varane's first-half header and doubled their advantage shortly past the hour mark when Muslera got his positioning hopelessly wrong and allowed Antoine Griezmann's 25-yard strike to squirm off his hands and into the back of the net. It was arguably the worst goalkeeping error of the tournament so far and Neville did not hold back in his role alongside Sam Matterface as co-commentator on ITV.

Quite apart from being written off before a ball had been kicked, the success of both campaigns has been based on youthful energy and a system of playing three at the back.

I know there has been talk of Jordan not being as big as other keepers in the modern era but, in my opinion, you don't have to be a certain height to be called world-class. Absolutely not.

A rollercoaster of emotions: Mario Fernandes' family filmed during penalty miss

Russia's World Cup quarter-final defeat by Croatia was a rollercoaster for all involved at Sochi, but one man in particular felt an extreme mix of highs and lows like no other. Defender Mario Fernandes was momentarily a national hero after dragging the game back from the brink and heading home deep into extra-time, in doing so cancelling out a Croatia strike and forcing a penalty shootout. Fernandes was on target in the 115th minute to bring the scoreline back to 2-2, and amazing footage has since emerged of his family and friends gathered around a big screen to see the scenes unfold.
