Hugh Grant hilariously claims he's IMPRISONED his Swedish wife Anna Eberstein and kids as their native countries battle in World Cup match

They have been married for just under two months.

And while Hugh Grant is living in newlywed bliss with Swedish wife Anna Eberstein, it did not stop him using his wicked British humour ahead of England vs Sweden quarter-final of the World Cup.

Taking to Twitter, cheeky Hugh penned: 'Have imprisoned Swedish wife and children until 6pm. Enemy aliens. #doingmybit' - regarding their two children.

Ahead of Saturday's match, the cheeky actor took to Twitter to joke that he was staying loyal to his roots and distancing himself from his family for the match.

Hugh married Swedish producer Anna, 39, in May in Kensington and Chelsea registry office after six years together, with many seeing it as a surprise after the Hollywood heavyweight has repeated expressed his reluctance to tie the knot.

The Bridget Jones star only recently returned from his honeymoon with now-wife Anna, after surprising fans with the news that they had tied the knot close to their £10 million London home.

The couple have been together six years and share three children, John Mungo, who was born in September 2012, and another child born in December 2015.

And despite previously expressing his reluctance to become a husband, Hugh recently told Savannah Guthrie on NBC's Today show he wished he had done it sooner.

He said: 'It's really nice, I can't pretend it isn't. I should have done it before. I'm just lucky. I've got a great wife. I love her.'

Hugh had been known for his reluctance to marry over the years - having split up with his actress girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley in 2000 after 13 years together.

He told People magazine in 2015: 'I'm not really a believer in marriage. I've seen very few good examples, maybe five, in my life, but I think otherwise it's a recipe for mutual misery.'

And while he seemed delighted to be a married man, Hugh did reveal there was also a practical reason behind the decision in a chat with USA Today.

He explained: 'My wife agrees with me that marriage is a pretty preposterous social construct, but when you've got three children, it's a nice thing to do.

'I didn't like going through immigration into countries where they'd say, 'Everyone with a Grant passport, over here, and all the others through there.' She went through with the nannies. That seemed all wrong.'
