James Franco washes his cares away as he hits the waves for a day of surfing in the Hamptons

He's been quietly getting on with work and staying out of the spotlight, after accusations of sexually inappropriate behaviour surfaced earlier this year.

But James Franco washed his cares away on Sunday, as he hit the waves for a spot of surfing.

A wide smile on his face, the Disaster Artist star was spotted catching some waves with a few of his friends in the Hamptons.

The 40-year old looked rock solid in a black wetsuit as he showed off his new found skills in the ocean.

The Oscar nominee spent hours hitting wave after wave with his guy pals.

When it was all over, he changed in some shorts and a T-shirt and then hopped into the back of his buddy's pickup truck and got a lift home.

The day out came in a break from filming the HBO drama series The Deuce, which offers a look at life in New York City during the 1970's and 80's.

Season two is set to premiere September. James directed two of the new episodes of the critically acclaimed show.

Franco's status on the show had been in question after five women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against the actor early this year.

HBO said it reached out to staffers and found no complaints or concerns raised by his behavior on the set of The Deuce.

James is best known for his roles in 127 Hours, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, Milk, Pineapple Express and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

He was nominated for Academy Award for Best Actor for 127 Hours, and he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for the 2017 film The Disaster Artist.

Aside from his hugely successful acting career, in recent years he has gone on to earn a PhD in English, publish novels, teach college classes, fill galleries with artwork and learn how to fly a plane - just to name a few.

But then, in the last couple of years, he decided to keep things simple and ease his workload and focus in on select projects.

And during that time of reflection he found surfing, which has since turned into a full-fledged passion and a source of zen.

'I got into surfing... so that is all I’m really doing now. That is how I get the majority of my exercise now, too. But it also teaches me a lot of lessons,' he revealed in a recent interview with Men's Journal.
