Sena MLAs disrupt Maharashtra Assembly with pro-Vidarbha slogans

The Shiv Sena on Tuesday created a ruckus in the Maharashtra Assembly after MLAs from Vidarbha chanted pro-Vidarbha slogans at the end of their swearing-in.

Objecting to the slogans of ‘Jai Vidarbha’, senior Sena leader Eknath Shinde said they were an insult to united Maharashtra.

“Late Sena supremo Bal Thackeray had voiced for united Maharashtra. The Sena’s stand is no different even now. We will not allow division of Maharashtra. As many as 105 people sacrificed their lives for united Maharashtra,” Shinde said.

Taking cognisance of the statements made by pro-Vidarbha MLAs, pro-tem Speaker Jiva Pandu Gavit asked the MLAs not make “separatist” and “derogatory” statements against Maharashtra.

He also instructed the legislators to take theoath as mentioned in the pro-forma and desist from regional biases.

However, defying the pro-tem Speaker’s direction, BJP MLA Ashish Deshmukh from Katol in Nagpur shouted at Gavit. The protem Speaker reprimanded the MLAs and said he would suspend anyone who did not desist.

“All should be serious towards a united Maharashtra. Members are requested not to make comments which are divisive in nature and against the interests of the state. They should stick to the format of the oath and other comments will not be part of proceedings,” Gavit urged.

Meanwhile, party sources said Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had written a letter to the pro-tem Speaker urging him that MLAs should desist from issuing regional statements.
